Shenandoah City Council names engineer for $367K storm sewer project, appoints tourism advisory board

The Shenandoah City Council has approved Coastline Rail Engineering, a Spring-based company, for its I-45 redevelopment zone storm sewer extension project for a total of $367,775.50, an amount officials said is well below what was slated for the project.

What to know: Interim Public Works Director Rual Porras told council at the Jan. 14 meeting that 11 bids were received Dec. 16 for the project. Porras said the project will consist of approximately 1,782 linear feet of storm sewer extension, including manholes, inlets, and concrete work, providing drainage to the future redevelopment area of the city.

The project will be at Shenandoah Drive and Research Forest Drive, per the agenda packet.

Also on the agenda: Council also approved members of the Shenandoah Tourism Advisory Board, an advisory council that will make recommendations to John Mayner, director of the city's convention and visitor bureau Visit Shenandoah, about promotional opportunities. The board was approved at the Sept. 24 meeting, as previously reported by Community Impact.

A total of nine members will be on the board.

Caffe Di Fiore is preparing to open its second location, owner Eduardo Camarena said.

The details: The restaurant is planning a soft opening Jan. 23, followed by a grand opening March 6, Camarena said. He said the team chose the Conroe-Montgomery area to offer locals a warm, welcoming spot with “something a little different,” blending Mexican and Italian influences alongside familiar American comfort dishes.

Camarena said The Woodlands-based business is built on family values and aims to create a friendly atmosphere where guests can gather often, whether dining with friends, as a couple or solo.

Rodeo Houston to hold January job fair for part-time event staff

Recruiters from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo will host a job fair Jan. 24 to hire for a variety of seasonal roles for the upcoming 2026 rodeo.

The overview: Rodeo staff as well as representatives from ASM Global, Amarak and Safe Management are hiring for part-time positions, including concessions, cashiers, bartenders, waitstaff, event staff and security, per a Jan. 13 news release.

What you need to know: Candidates must be 18 years or older to participate in the Jan. 24 job fair, which will run from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at NRG Stadium, according to the release. Interested applicants are encouraged to review available positions and apply online before attending the fair.

Additionally, American Medical Response is hiring paramedics and emergency personnel to work the rodeo events, and the rodeo's carnival partner, RCS, is recruiting game and carnival ride attendants, per the release.

The overview: Jasmine Crockett, Ahmad R. Hassan and James Talarico are competing for the Democratic nomination for a six-year term in the U.S. Senate.

The details: Each state has two U.S. senators, with Ted Cruz and John Cornyn currently representing Texas. Cornyn, whose seat is up for election, is running for reelection in an eight-way Republican primary.

Seven Republican candidates are challenging Cornyn for the Republican nomination: John O. Adefope, Anna Bender, Virgil John Bierschwale, Sara Canady, Wesley Hunt, Gulrez “Gus” Khan and Ken Paxton.

If no candidate receives more than 50% of the votes in the Republican primary, a runoff election will be held between the two top vote-getters on May 26.

Looking ahead: The winning Republican candidate will face the winner of the Democratic nomination in November; the winner of that election will be sworn in to the U.S. Senate in January 2027.
