Gierisch Brothers Motor Company celebrates 60th anniversary in Roanoke

Gierisch Brothers Motor Company celebrated its 60th anniversary Jan. 3.

The details: The family-owned business provides services on air conditioning, brakes, electrical systems, engine repair, oil changes, radiators, suspension, tire inspection, transmission service, tune-ups and wheel alignment, according to its website.

The background: Brothers Carl and Dorman Gierisch opened a three-bay metal shop for vehicle repairs west of SH 114, according to a social media post.

The brothers opened Roanoke Auto Supply in 1973 to add auto parts to the repair shop. Carl Gierisch took over as the sole owner in 1975, buying out his brother's interest. In 2000, he added his three sons to the partnership.

InfuZen Health to offer IV therapy, Infrared sauna services in Keller

Fort Worth medical spa InfuZen Health is moving its services to a new location in Old Town Keller.

The details: InfuZen offers a variety of IV therapy options and other services, such as:

  • Infrared sauna sessions
  • Intramuscular injections
  • Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide, or NAD, therapy

InfuZen co-owner Sarah Shadwick said the Keller location is also looking to invest in a float tank and hyperbaric tank.

The background: Keller City Council approved a specific use permit, or SUP, for InfuZen at a regular meeting Dec. 2.

Play Street Museum offers an interactive play space in Southlake

Play Street Museum Southlake is now open. The business offers an indoor play area that has self-directed play, stimulates children’s imaginations, encourages them to problem solve and allows them to refine their social skills, according to the company website.

Zooming in: The facility is for children aged 1-8 years old. The space on weekends can be rented for special events, holiday events and birthday parties, said Melanie McBride, who runs the venture with her husband, Steve. The Southlake location features a retail portion at the front of the store, and children will be given a wooden dollar to learn how to use commerce, McBride said.

The details: Each of the locations has a different theme, and Southlake is only one of three in Texas with the farm theme, along with locations in McKinney and Cypress.

Downtown Denton bookstore Patchouli Joe's to shutter its doors

After seven years in business and five years in Denton, independent bookstore Patchouli Joe’s Books and Indulgences will close at the end of March, according to a Jan. 2 announcement on the company website.

The details: The announcement cites low sales, higher costs and structural changes in the area, like a loss of convenient parking for customers, as factors in closing the store.

“None of us truly knows what may happen but we do know that we cannot continue in our current location, the first Denton home of Patchouli Joe’s,” the announcement stated.

Some background: Owners Joe and Diane Mayes originally opened the shop in Leander in 2019, per previous Community Impact reporting. The company relocated to Denton in 2021

Charter school system launches online high school courses for students statewide

Texas charter system Harmony Public Schools launched a new virtual learning platform on Jan. 5 that allows students across the state to take high school courses online.

The overview: The Harmony Online Learning program includes dozens of courses aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills standards, all of which are self-paced, according to a news release.

More details: Students can choose from dozens of courses in core subjects, electives, Advanced Placement and Career and Technical Education, according to the program’s website. The offerings aim to help students complete credit recovery, get ahead with their requirements and access courses not available at their home campus. Credit earned through Harmony may be applied toward high school graduation requirements depending on local district policies, per the release.

One more thing: Interested families can enroll online, and spring courses begin Jan. 12, per the release. The cost of tuition per course is $325, a spokesperson from Harmony Public Schools told Community Impact.
