Plano Fire-Rescue hires 22 firefighters for transition to ‘24/72’ shift schedule

Plano Fire-Rescue has hired 22 firefighters since last December as part of the transition to a “24/72” shift schedule, Fire Chief Chris Biggerstaff said.

The context: Plano Fire-Rescue is the first all-paid fire department in Texas to adopt the 24/72 schedule, which gives firefighters 72 hours off between each 24-hour shift.

Looking ahead: The department plans to hire 22 more firefighters in 2027 and 2028 in preparation for the official switch to 24/72 in 2029, Biggerstaff said.

Yarbrough to be Republican nominee for US House District 32 after Binkley withdraws

Ryan Binkley has withdrawn from the Republican primary runoff for US House District 32, leaving Jace Yarbrough as the party’s candidate for the seat in the November election.

Yarbrough will face Democratic nominee and current Richardson council member Dan Barrios in November.

What you need to know: Yarbrough received 33,812, or 48.96% of votes in the March 3 Republican primary election, narrowly missing the 50% mark needed to avoid a runoff election, which would have been on the March 26 ballot.

Binkley finished second among nine primary candidates, receiving 15,000 votes. He announced his withdrawal from the runoff in a March 17 statement, in which he also congratulated Yarbrough on his victory and a “disciplined campaign.”
