The Woodlands approves $50M Houston deal as city delays vote

The Woodlands Township on Aug. 26 voted 7-0 at a special meeting to approve the third amendment to the Regional Participation Agreement between the township and the city of Houston following a Houston City Council meeting held earlier that day.

Houston officials had delayed their vote on an agreement that would permanently eliminate the possibility of Houston annexing The Woodlands Township and provide for $50 million in payments from The Woodlands to Houston by 2030.

The agreement will take effect if it is approved by Houston.

What happened: Houston City Council delayed voting by one week, but The Woodlands went forward with its 4 p.m. meeting to discuss the plan.

The Woodlands Arts Council unveils new 'The Art of Gratitude' mural

The Woodlands Arts Council, an arts and culture nonprofit organization, unveiled a new mural for permanent display at the Kevin Brady Community Center outside the Cathy Brady Ballroom on Aug. 19.

“The Art of Gratitude” is a mural by local artist Marlo Saucedo composed of two panels making up a 6-foot-by-6-foot piece using her signature word-based painting style. It features messages from community members, according to a news release from The Woodlands Arts Council.

Zooming in: The mural was funded in part by a $1,776 grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, in honor of the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. The remaining funds were raised through The Woodlands Arts Council’s Giving Tuesday campaign where The Woodlands Arts Council reached its goal of raising $6,000.

Conroe ISD: Enrollment projections not expected to change construction plans

While enrollment projections have fallen compared to previously expected numbers, Conroe ISD officials said the needs that will be served by current construction remain, and the lower expected enrollment numbers districtwide do not reflect changes at the campuses where overcrowding has been an issue.

"The schools currently under construction as part of the 2023 bond program were identified based on existing overcrowding and capacity concerns documented during the 2022 planning process," CISD Executive Director of Communications Andrew Stewart said.

What's next: In response to needs based on current enrollment in the east side of the district, Kacy Arnold Elementary School, located at 5175 Woodsons Spring Drive in Spring, opened in August and is projected to serve 950 students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Grand Oaks Junior High, located at 28075 Woodson’s Grand Drive in Spring, is scheduled to open in August 2027 and is projected to serve 800 students in seventh and eighth grade.
