ICYMI: Fair Oaks Parkway left turn lane underway, TxDOT plans Loop 1604 intersection improvements

Two road projects in Fair Oaks Ranch are underway, while TxDOT continues construction along Loop 1604. Check out the latest on these three transportation projects.

Fair Oaks Parkway turning lane to Front Gate construction begins: A new left-turn lane is being added from northbound Fair Oaks Parkway onto Front Gate. This improvement is planned to help congestion of northbound traffic on Fair Oaks Parkway. The project will add 2 feet of pavement to the median and 1 foot to the outside shoulder while realigning the lanes.

Fair Oaks Ranch City Council authorized the project Feb. 5. This adjustment improves turning movements, sight distance and clearance for motorists exiting Front Gate onto eastbound Fair Oaks Parkway. Construction began March 3 and is expected to take three weeks to complete. During construction, the center median will be closed, and detours will be placed at Heritage Trail and Lesslie Pfeiffer Drive.

What else? Work moves forward on the Ralph Fair Road bridge, and TxDOT begins the final phase of the Loop 1604 and Blanco Road diverging diamond interchange.

TxDOT builds San Antonio’s first diverging diamond interchange at Blanco Road and Loop 1604

As Segment 3 of the Loop 1604 North Expansion project reaches its final phases, the Texas Department of Transportation is beginning construction on San Antonio’s first diverging diamond interchange at the Blanco Road and Loop 1604 interchange.

This new configuration is designed to ease traffic congestion at one of the most heavily traveled corridors in the region.

The overview: Jennifer Serold, public information officer for the TxDOT's San Antonio district, said the new Blanco Road and Loop 1604 diverging diamond interchange, or DDI, will temporarily shift traffic to the left side of the road, allowing free‑flow left turns, shorter signal cycles, and safer, more efficient movement through one of the region’s busiest intersections.

Looking ahead: A full weekend closure is anticipated to occur in March, with Serold stating that the shift will not occur over March 13 so as not to interfere with spring break. TxDOT officials said the speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph during construction but will be raised back to the normal 45 mph once construction is complete.
