Sugar Land residents could see an increase to the city’s tax rate.

What residents need to know: At an Aug. 18 meeting, Sugar Land City Council proposed a maximum tax rate of $0.381116 per $100 of taxable value—an increase of more than 6% from the current rate of $0.358827.

The impact: If approved, the property bill of a home with a taxable value of $369,495 would see an annual increase of $96, or $7.98 per month, Steadman said.

Across the city, 50% of households are expected to see an impact of less than $8 a month added to their bills, while 75% will see less than $10 per month.

Looking ahead: City Council will host a public hearing for the tax rate on Sept. 8 followed by a Sept. 15 budget and tax rate adoption vote.

Amy’s Cookie Co. and Bakery will host a three-day grand opening for its new Sugar Land location, officials announced in an Aug. 17 Facebook post.

What they offer: The bakery offers a variety of cookies, cakes and brownies as well as customizable orders for events such as birthdays, weddings, school functions and graduations, according to its website.

This November, Libertarian Ted Brown, Republican Ken Paxton and Democrat James Talarico are running to be Texas' next U.S. senator.

The overview: Each state has two U.S. senators serving staggered terms, with Ted Cruz and John Cornyn currently representing Texas. Cornyn ran for reelection but lost his primary race, and the winner of the November election will replace him in January.

Paxton advanced to the general election after beating Cornyn in a primary runoff, while Talarico beat two other contenders in the Democratic primary, Community Impact reported. Brown was selected as the Texas Libertarian Party's candidate during an April nominating convention.

At the polls: Early voting runs from Oct. 19-30 for dozens of statewide and local races. Election Day is Nov. 3.
