On July 21, Conroe ISD’s board of trustees will discuss a report by the CISD School Health Advisory Council, or SHAC, and a draft of district priorities for the 90th Texas Legislature. 

The gist: According to its website, SHAC was founded to “ensure that community values and health issues are reflected in the district's health and physical education instruction.” The council's priorities for CISD include students' physical and mental health. 

The upcoming report will be a summary of the work the council has done this past school year and a possible look into what's next for the district for the 2026-27 school year. 

CISD will also review info on the priorities, outline and timeline before the 90th Texas Legislature. The session officially convenes Jan. 12, 2027, to discuss and vote on issues regarding education and state spending, among other topics.

As previously reported, CISD is currently undergoing many changes within the district, the biggest being the increase in the special education student population. 

Waygood Coffee held a soft opening beginning July 15, and a grand opening is being held the week of July 20, according to information from the company.

What's on the menu: The coffeehouse specializes in crafting espresso-based drinks with made-in-house customizations, and signature syrups include its housemade vanilla and caramel.

Flavors on the summer menu include several guava drinks and the Banana Cloud Latte. The company also offers matcha lattes with additional flavorings such as strawberry, coconut, and lavender and honey.

Gov. Greg Abbott named Robert S. Howden, one of his senior advisers and his office's legislative director, as Texas' 116th secretary of state effective July 18. Howden will succeed Secretary of State Jane Nelson, who resigned effective July 17 more than three years after she took office.

As the state's chief elections officer, Howden will be responsible for overseeing the application of Texas election laws and assisting local election officials. The secretary of state's office also manages business records, government rules and regulations, and other official duties.

Following Abbott's appointment, Howden must be confirmed for the position by at least two-thirds of the Texas Senate. The state Legislature's next regular session will begin in January.
