College Station's future Harvey Road widening plan calls for four lanes, roundabouts

A proposed plan to widen Harvey Road in College Station would expand State Hwy. 30 to four lanes and add roundabouts at major intersections, but construction funding has not yet been secured.

In an open house information session on Oct. 20, the Texas Department of Transportation’s Bryan District laid out its development of the “SH 30 (Harvey Road) Corridor Plan” in coordination with Brazos County, the city of College Station and the Bryan-College Station Metropolitan Planning Organization.

The highlights:

  • The road would expand from two lanes to a four-lane roadway with a narrow, raised median and a 10-foot-wide shared-use path.

  • The plan requires additional right of way but would not displace buildings.

  • Brazos County's population is projected to grow 30% from 2020 to 2040, and average daily traffic on Harvey Road is projected to rise about 60% between 2022 and 2052.

  • The corridor recorded 57 crashes from 2019 through 2023.

  • The project will not be up for considered priority for up to four years.

Brazos County to begin renovations on new 911 dispatch center

Brazos County commissioners awarded a $10 million contract to renovate the county’s future 911 dispatch center on Oct. 20.

About the project: The county bought the building at 2504 Kent St. in 2024 to eventually relocate its emergency dispatch operations. Renovation of the building to get it up to spec for the county’s 911 team is expected to be completed by 2028, according to agenda documents. Commissioners awarded the contract to the construction firm SpawGlass.

The new facility will have more space, secure parking and a more reliable location overall, according to county documents. The 911 district has been at its current building since 1988 and now has around 36 dispatchers on staff.

Also of note:

  • Commissioners approved a 116-month $485,000 contract to purchase software from Axon Enterprise for the DA's office to evaluate digital evidence and process cases faster.

  • The county approved a $298,000 contract for its voter registration and elections management system with VR Systems to help county staff maintain voter records and process and fulfill ballot-by-mail requests.
