Sheldon Community Fire & Rescue celebrates groundbreaking of new fire station at Generation Park

Officials with Sheldon Community Fire & Rescue and master-planned community Generation Park celebrated an Oct. 15 groundbreaking for the fire department’s new fire station, Generation Park officials announced in an Oct. 16 post via Facebook.

The details: According to a July 8 filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, the $9.3 million project will include the construction of a roughly 14,900-square-foot facility.

The fire station will represent Sheldon Community Fire & Rescue’s fifth station in the area. According to the website, the fire department covers a roughly 60-square-mile area containing around 185,000 residents.

What’s next: While the filing did not include a projected opening date, construction is expected to wrap up in July 2027.

Here’s what Lake Houston-area voters need to know before the Nov. 4 election

As early voting begins Oct. 20, here is everything voters in the Lake Houston area need to know ahead of the Nov. 4 election.

What residents should know: For the upcoming election, voters should note the following dates:

  • Oct. 20: First day of early voting
  • Oct. 24: Last day to apply for ballot by mail (received, not postmarked)
  • Oct. 31: Last day of early voting
  • Nov. 4: Election Day

What else? In November, voters across the state will have the opportunity to weigh in on 17 proposed state constitutional amendments, as previously reported by Community Impact. The amendments center around issues such as property tax reduction and funding water supply projects.

Zooming in: Additionally, sixteen candidates—including five Republicans, seven Democrats, three Independent candidates and one Green Party candidate—are running for U.S. Representative District 18. 

Some residents in the Lake Houston area, including Kingwood residents, will also vote in Houston City Council’s race for the council's at-large Position 4 seat. Fifteen candidates are set to appear on the ballot.

Q&A: Get to know the candidates running for U.S. Representative District 18

Sixteen candidates—including five Republicans, seven Democrats, three Independent candidates and one Green Party candidate—are running for U.S. Representative District 18 in the upcoming Nov. 4 election.

Some context: As previously reported by Community Impact, a special election is being held to fill the vacant seat after incumbent Sylvester Turner, who also previously served as Houston mayor, died in March. In November 2024, Turner was elected to the vacant seat after former U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee died in July 2024.

Members of the U.S. House of Representatives are elected for a two-year term with no term limits. District 18 covers portions of southwest and northeast Houston.

May special election set for Senate District 4 after Brandon Creighton vacates seat

A special election will be held May 2 to fill Texas Senate District 4, Gov. Greg Abbott announced Oct. 16. The seat became vacant earlier this month when former Sen. Brandon Creighton resigned from the legislature to lead the Texas Tech University System.

The overview: Senate District 4 covers all of Chambers County, a large portion of Montgomery County and parts of Jefferson, Harris and Galveston counties, serving a total population of 954,803 people, according to the 2020 census.

Prospective candidates have until March 3 to file to appear on the special election ballot, according to the governor’s proclamation.

The candidates: On Oct. 2, Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon resigned from his position to run for Senate District 4. Ligon has been the county’s district attorney for 17 years and will remain in that role until Abbott appoints a successor.

Other candidates had not been announced as of press time. Whoever wins the special election will serve the remainder of Creighton’s term, which runs until January 2027.
