Cakery to bring Mediterranean-inspired desserts to Kingwood

Officials with Cakery will celebrate a Nov. 6 opening for their new location in Kingwood, owner Maral Veysalova confirmed Nov. 3.

The details: In September, Veysalova said Cakery would offer a variety of handcrafted cakes, pastries and sweets, including the bakery’s signature Honey Cake, Milky Bird, traditional baklava and other Mediterranean-inspired desserts.

“We take pride in preparing our desserts with care and focusing on freshness, quality ingredients, and flavors that we would be proud to serve to our own family,” Veysalova said.

Quote of note: Veysalova added that the bakery aims to create a welcoming feel for customers.

Kingwood Ballet gears up for 42nd annual Nutcracker performance

While ballet may be an old art form, nonprofit dance company Kingwood Ballet teaches skills that are still valuable today, even outside the dance world, Co-Director Kelley Agnew said.

About the program: Kingwood Ballet is a nonprofit pre-professional dance company housed inside Stacey’s Dance Studio in Kingwood, Agnew said. The organization is co-directed by Agnew, Trish King, Anoushka Miranda and Kerri Hawk.

Why it matters: Regardless of whether students want to become professional dancers, ballet teaches them important life skills such as determination and resilience, Agnew added.

“They fall right in front of you and you're like, ‘You okay? Good. Stand up, let's try it again,’” Agnew said. “It's just a tiny little life lesson all in an hour and a half.”

Houston Parks Department seeks first developer fee hike since 2007

The Houston Parks and Recreation Department recommended that the council approve an increase in a developer fee that has not been adjusted in nearly 20 years.

Explained: HPRD collects a fee from developers as part of the city’s open space ordinance, which provides parks, recreational amenities and open space for residential areas.

If a developer receives a permit or certificate of occupancy for a property, such as a multi-family unit, the developer must pay a fee per unit. That fee goes toward the fund, which is used partly to maintain city parks.

The fee is $700, but HPRD Director Kenneth Allen said the department is looking to increase the fee to $900, which would be the first time the fee has been adjusted since the creation of the fund in 2007.

What’s changed: The proposed increase is in response to the rising appraised land values and is considered below the allowed amount under state law, which caps the fee at a maximum of $1,260.
