Trestle Studio acquires Lakeway Resort & Spa, plans for renovations

Trestle Studio, a boutique real estate investment and development firm, acquired Lakeway Resort & Spa in May with plans to renovate and modernize the space.

The overview: Lakeway Resort and Spa is a 168-room property founded in 1963 and offers 65 miles of shoreline access on Lake Travis while remaining close to golf courses, wineries and downtown Austin.

Renovations include refreshing more than 24,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor gathering spaces, redeveloping locally driven food options, expanding wellness and recreational programming, and modernizing guestrooms and other amenities.

What they’re saying: "There are very few properties where the sense of place is so profound," said Jake Lamstein, Founder of Trestle Studio. "Lakeway Resort & Spa is one of them. Its relationship to Lake Travis, to the landscape, to the story of this community—that's what drew us to this acquisition.”

Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Austin prepares students for future careers

The medical center partnered with Austin ISD, Goodwill and the Texas Workforce Commission to complete the program, which helped students with disabilities prepare for their future careers.

The details: Two AISD graduates with disabilities receiving special education services had the opportunity to participate in Project SEARCH, which enabled them to develop real-world work skills in a hospital setting. The students had recently graduated from high school, but are qualified to receive additional training in areas such as job skills, daily living skills and independence to transition into the workforce, according to a news release.

The students spend one week in each rotation at the hospital, from food services to pre-op, operating room and emergency imaging.

ERCOT forecasts record electric demand this summer amid data center boom; says grid will hold up

Texans are on track to use more electricity this summer than ever before, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas announced during a board meeting this week.

The details: ERCOT, which operates the power grid for the majority of Texas, is forecasting high temperatures and moderate rainfall this summer. Coupled with the proliferation of data centers and other large projects, demand on the grid could surpass 92 gigawatts, officials estimated June 2.

This would break ERCOT’s current demand record of 85.5 gigawatts, which was set during an August 2023 heat wave.

What it means: However, ERCOT officials said a grid emergency or blackout is unlikely this summer. State officials have said this is due to:

  • The addition of nearly 11 gigawatts of power capacity to the grid in the last few months
  • The agency's ability to require large facilities to reduce their energy use in tight times

Zooming in: There is a 0.09% chance of a grid emergency this June and a 0.21% chance of an emergency in July, ERCOT found in recent reports.
