Hays County voters will have a chance to weigh in during the Nov. 4 elections on whether they want to allow for the addition of 22.3 acres to the East Hays County Municipal Utility District No. 2.

Some context: As previously reported by Community Impact, MUDs are typically created for divisions in which a city does not provide utilities, typically due to city limits. MUDs construct and manage utilities such as water and sewage systems so that residents in the neighborhood can receive those services.

Dates to know

• Oct. 6: last day to register to vote
• Oct. 20: first day of early voting
• Oct. 23: last day to apply for a ballot by mail—with the application received in office—not postmarked
• Oct. 31: last day of early voting in person
• Nov. 4: Election Day

A new restaurant bringing a homestyle food menu based on recipes from owner Scott Roberts’ grandmother, Roxanna, is opening soon in Buda, according to a news release.

Roxie’s, from the family that established The Salt Lick BBQ, will be opening in the fall.

What you need to know: Roberts said he plans for Roxie’s to be open daily for lunch and dinner.

What they offer: The menu will feature pimento cheese, deviled eggs topped with fried chicken bites, fried chicken, chicken-fried steak, char-grilled steak and a selection of dessert pies. The bar will have cocktails, including margaritas and frozen peach bellinis.

Quote of note: “Buda values tradition and community, and that’s exactly what we’re bringing to the table at Roxie’s,” Roberts, a former Buda Elementary School student, said. “We want this to be a place where families gather, friends meet and everyone feels at home.”

Both chambers of the Texas Legislature have voted to overhaul the state’s standardized testing system, putting public school students one step closer to taking new exams in the 2027-28 school year.

The details: House Bill 8 would eliminate the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness and replace it with three shorter tests, which students would take at the beginning, middle and end of each school year.

Bill author Rep. Brad Buckley, R-Salado, said HB 8 would “reduce test anxiety, provide teachers with immediate feedback and create a pathway for trust in our system again." The majority of House Democrats and a few Republicans disagreed, arguing Aug. 26 that the bill would increase the amount of time students spend on exams and essentially create “another STAAR test” developed by the Texas Education Agency.

Next steps: After state senators passed HB 8 with a 21-7 vote Aug. 27, the bill returned to the House for consideration of a Senate amendment. If House lawmakers sign off on the changes, HB 8 will be sent to the governor.
