Conroe approves feral cat ordinance, donor-funded adoption trailer for animal shelter

Conroe City Council on March 12 approved allowing a trap-neuter-return program within city limits and authorizing the purchase of a new mobile adoption trailer.

The context: The votes came after the council delayed the TNR item in late February for additional review, as previously reported. The TNR ordinance amends Chapter 10 of the city’s code of ordinances, and allows for caregivers and organizations to humanely trap, vaccinate, sterilize and return free-roaming cats to where they were found.

Also on the agenda: Council also approved the purchase of a $58,850 adoption and rescue trailer for the Conroe Animal Shelter. Police Chief Jon Buckholtz said the trailer will allow the shelter to bring animals into the community in a self-sustaining, climate-controlled setup with heat and air conditioning instead of transporting them in cages in the back of a truck. He said the trailer is intended to support more off-site adoptions as the shelter continues to improve outcomes.

New gym coming to Montgomery

A new gym is coming to Montgomery, owner Garrett Pemelton said.

The details: GP Training is a performance and recovery facility offering strength & conditioning, speed/agility development, football and other sport-specific training, with a recovery setup to help athletes stay healthy and perform at their best, Pemelton said.

The gym has a full weight room, a 50-yard outdoor turf field with protective padding underneath, higher-rep speed and position work and recovery tools, Pemelton said.

On the recovery side, the gym also offers red-light therapy, a sauna and a hyperbaric chamber.

“Along with training, we're committed to building community through events, camps, clinics and outreach opportunities that bring families together and give athletes a positive place to grow,” Pemelton said. “Our culture is built on accountability, leadership, and doing things the right way. We want athletes to leave here not only performing better, but carrying themselves better—at school, at home, and in their future.”

Q&A: Jill Boullion reflects on 10 years as Bayou Land Conservancy executive director

After 10 years as Bayou Land Conservancy’s executive director, Jill Boullion reflected on her time spent in leadership and the progress the conservancy has made over the years. According to its website, the conservancy works to preserve land along streams for better flood control, clean water and wildlife.

You’ve been the executive director at the Bayou Land Conservancy for the past 10 years. What motivated you to pursue your role?
“Before I came here, I was at the Greens Bayou Coalition. I had spent all my career in marketing and advertising, so it was kind of like getting to take all the experience and skills I had built up over all that time and put them into something I was passionate about."

What do you wish more people knew about the Bayou Land Conservancy?
A lot of people don't realize where we get our support and what makes us run. A big part of what we do is connecting people with nature so that we're a sustainable organization.
