Small businesses to debut shops in renovated grain silos at McKinney's Tupps Brewery

A group of small businesses will debut shops at Tupps Brewery in East McKinney during a March 7 grand opening event.

The specifics: The grand opening event marks the launch of The Silos at Tupps Brewery, a group of small businesses that will operate shops in renovated grain silos. The businesses are part of Tupps Brewery’s Build-Your-Own-Business program, according to a news release.

“Tupps started as a family dream,” Tupps Brewery Founder Keith Lewis said in the release. “We built it from the ground up, and we want others to have that same opportunity."

Get involved: The grand opening event is planned for 11 a.m.-6 p.m. March 7 at Tupps Brewery, located at 402 E. Louisiana St. in McKinney. The free event will begin with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11:30 a.m. and include live music, craft beer and cocktails, food from the Tupps Brewery kitchen and more. Guests will be able to visit all of the silos and shop from the small businesses.

The Kebab Shop is now open in McKinney’s West Grove, according to a company social media post.

On the menu: The eatery serves a variety of Mediterranean dishes featuring rotisserie and grilled kebabs, including wraps, bowls and plates.

McKinney Community Development Corp. awards nearly $2.7M to 3 projects

The McKinney Community Development Corp. awarded $2.66 million to three local projects expected to benefit the community, according to a news release.

In a nutshell: The MCDC board of directors awarded funding as part of its Project Grants program during a Feb. 26 meeting. Project grants are available for eligible infrastructure improvement projects, projects related to low-income housing and more.

The details: Board members awarded $2,661,800 in total to three projects.

  • McKinney Ranch Senior Living: $2.5 million
  • Heritage Guild of Collin County: $148,500
  • Collin County History Museum: $13,300

The background: MCDC was created in 1996 after voters approved a half-cent sales tax to be used for grants and projects. More than $230 million has been awarded to projects, events and retail infrastructure projects since MCDC was founded.

4.5M Texans voted in March 3 primary, shattering past turnout records

Over 2.3 million Democrats and nearly 2.2 million Republicans voted in the March 3 election, according to unofficial election results from the secretary of state. Totaling nearly 4.5 million voters, this is “the highest voter turnout for a primary in Texas history,” the secretary of state’s office said.

By the numbers: Nearly one-fourth of Texas’ 18.7 million registered voters participated in the primaries, shattering turnout rates from recent years. Less than one-fifth of registered voters cast ballots in the 2024 presidential and 2022 midterm primaries, state election records show.

Texas’ previous primary turnout record was set in 2008, when 4.2 million voters cast ballots in high-profile presidential primaries.

Zooming in: Election data shows the most people cast votes in the high-profile U.S. Senate races that topped the ticket, with the total numbers of votes steadily decreasing down the ballot in both primaries.

There is “some certainty” that voter enthusiasm will extend to the November midterm election, Republican data analyst Ross Hunt told Community Impact during early voting.
