Friendswood ISD approves lower tax rate, balanced budget for FY 2026-27

Friendswood ISD’s board of trustees approved a balanced budget and lower tax rate for fiscal year 2026-27 at its Aug. 24 workshop. The budget represents a nearly 4% increase from FY 2025-26 and accounts for approved staff raises, stipends and other compensation adjustments.

What residents need to know: The district approved a tax rate of $1.0249 per $100 valuation of a home, or nearly 0.5% lower than last year’s rate of $1.03 per $100 valuation of a home. The budget includes nearly $70.4 million for both revenues and expenses, resulting in a balanced budget for FY 2026-27, documents show.

Some context: At a March 23 workshop, district officials initially projected a $3.3 million surplus, as previously reported by Community Impact. The board later approved a compensation plan that resulted in the budget balancing.

Will Clayton Parkway lane closures planned near IAH this week

Motorists traveling to and from George Bush Intercontinental Airport this week should allow extra travel time due to nearby road construction, Houston Airport System officials announced in an Aug. 24 news release.

What you need to know: Beginning with prep work Aug. 24, HAS will repair concrete in the westbound lanes of Will Clayton Parkway between Kenswick Drive and Lee Road. Per the release, major demolition and concrete work will occur Aug. 25-28.

Officials noted motorists should anticipate lane closures, especially overnight, when two of three lanes will be closed for construction. Motorists can take John F. Kennedy Boulevard as an alternate route during construction. 

Stay tuned: All three lanes are expected to reopen by the afternoon of Aug. 28, per the release.

Texas voters will choose from Republican Bo French, Libertarian Arthur DiBianca and Democrat Jon Rosenthal in this November's Texas Railroad Commission race.

The details: The winner of the race will be sworn in to replace incumbent Commissioner Jim Wright in January.

French beat Wright in a May Republican primary runoff, advancing to the general election. Rosenthal ran uncontested in the March Democratic primary, while DiBianca was selected as the Texas Libertarian Party's candidate during an April nominating convention.

Did you know? The three-member railroad commission does not have any jurisdiction over the state's railroads—that authority was transferred to the Texas Department of Transportation and the federal government by 2005, according to the commission's website. Instead, the agency regulates Texas' oil and gas industries.

Looking ahead: Early voting in dozens of local and state races runs from Oct. 19-30, and Election Day is Nov. 3.
