Roman Forest City Council appoints former council member to his old position

Roman Forest City Council members appointed Jerry Reasner to serve in the position he vacated in March.

The details: Council members unanimously approved the appointment during the council’s June 22 meeting.

In March, Reasner originally vacated the position following the death of a family member, noting then that he would have likely missed more meetings if he didn’t opt to step down.

“Through a turn of events and changing in conditions, my understanding is Mr. Reasner is willing and able to reassume his position,” Mayor Pro Tem Mitchell Davis said prior to the vote. “That taken into consideration, we'd like to make the nomination that we reassign the [council position] back to its originally elected individual.”

Some context: In May, council members appointed Montgomery County Emergency Services District No. 7 Fire Chief Howard Rinewalt to serve in the open position, but he decided to decline the position after hearing feedback from other residents.

What’s next: Reasner will hold the position until it’s up for reelection in November.

Key Information
The age of AI: SHSU’s new Medical AI Institute aims to educate, conduct research

In 2024, Sam Houston State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine received a $5 million grant to create a new master’s degree. But SHSU-COM Dean Dr. Thomas Mohr said the vision evolved when they grew a group of artificial intelligence experts. SHSU-COM’s Medical AI Institute, announced last November, is underway with initiatives such as developing graduate certificates, Director Vinoth Sittaramane said.

What you need to know: Sittaramane said the new Medical AI Institute is centered around three objectives: education, research and clinical care.

Quote of note: “At the center of all of this, I think the belief is that technology should support people, especially patients, physicians, students and communities in a way that is practical, ethical and human-centered,” Sittaramane said.

Some context: Alongside the Medical AI Institute, SHSU-COM is also preparing to launch its new master’s program this fall, pending final approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. The new master’s in applied biomedical sciences will feature four specialized tracks, one of which will be in medical/health care artificial intelligence.
