Wastewater
McKenzie Water Reclamation Facility Expansion
The plant’s treatment capacity will expand from 2.5 million gallons per day, or MGD, to 5 MGD. This will provide capacity for ongoing and future growth. The McKenzie basin is the largest and fastest growing basin NBU serves and encompasses the Mayfair development.

  • Update: 62% complete
  • Timeline: Completion November 2026

Water
Wood Meadows
A new 16-inch waterline will be installed under the Guadalupe River, replacing an old 8-inch and 12-inch waterline that have reached the end of their service life.
  • Update: The project is 75% complete and four months ahead of schedule. The waterline has been drilled under the river and is currently being tied into NBU’s water system. An 8-inch waterline still needs to be extended on one side of the river.
  • Timeline: July-December

Headwaters at the Comal relocates offices in New Braunfels

Headwaters at the Comal moved its administrative offices into the center’s new building at 333 E. Klingemann St. in New Braunfels on Nov. 7, according to a news release.
What you need to know: The nonprofit organization is New Braunfels Utilities legacy project and is a public-private partnership showcasing green infrastructure and protection of the Comal River, as previously reported by Community Impact. 

Previously, the nonprofit's administrative offices were temporarily located at the corner of E. Klingemann St. and Lakeview Blvd.

“We are working to completely transform this site into a place of which we can all be proud,” Managing Director Nancy Pappas said in the release.

Related highlights: The move is a part of Phase 2 of the nonprofit organization's $28.5 million master-planned expansion project. Phase 2 construction began in 2023 and will add a new building equipped with meeting space for up to 200 people, conference rooms and more space for classes and exhibits, according to previous reporting by Community Impact.

On The Transportation Beat
Sixth, seventh flyover ramps open at Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange

As part of the ongoing Loop 1604 North Expansion project, the Texas Department of Transportation is opening two new flyover ramps at the Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange by Nov. 17.

These flyover ramps will connect eastbound I-10 to both directions of Loop 1604.

In a nutshell: According to a news release from TxDOT, these two newly opened flyover ramps bring the total to seven over the last 11 months.

The background: Once complete, the five-level interchange will consist of eight flyover ramps, roundabouts, a high-occupancy vehicle lane and other interchange improvements.

Jennifer Serold, public information officer for TxDOT's San Antonio district, said the first level of the interchange will consist of roundabouts at the ground level, providing access to adjacent properties. On the first level, new turnarounds and sidewalks will be added along I-10. Additionally, the existing VIA Park and Ride facility will be modified to fit underneath the new interchange.

After a year of construction, The Courthouse—a 25,000-square-foot pickleball, padel and restaurant venue—opened its doors to the New Braunfels community Nov. 4.

Locally owned diner now open in Universal City

A new diner has opened its doors in Northeast San Antonio.

The details: Grill House Burgers opened in Universal City at 3142 Pat Booker Road, Ste. 150 on Sept. 15.

The restaurant is locally owned by Zack Aly. Although this is Aly's first time owning a restaurant, he said he has worked for other burger joints in the past, which is what inspired him to open his own.
