Richardson City Council approves 90-day prohibition on new short-term rentals

Richardson City Council approved a 90-day prohibition on new short-term rental registrations, set to take effect this summer, at the April 27 council meeting.

What you need to know: The temporary prohibition, which will be in place from May 27-Aug. 25, will pause new registrations of short-term rentals—residential properties that are rented either in whole or in part for a period of no more than 30 consecutive days, such as properties found on sites like Airbnb or Vrbo.

According to city documents, the prohibition will allow the city to collect data on STRs in Richardson to inform potential future regulations, as well as address issues with property owners and managers.

The prohibition only applies to new registrations, so any short-term rentals that have registered with the city before May 27 will be able to continue operating as normal.
