The YMCA of Greater Houston named Nicole Peno as executive director of the Vic Coppinger Family YMCA in Pearland, according to a July 31 news release from Love Advertising.

Zooming in: Peno most recently served as senior marketing director for Pearland Town Center and also spent nearly seven years with the city of Pearland's Parks and Recreation Department, where she oversaw recreation facilities and program development.

Quote of note: "I'm honored to serve the community that has meant so much to my family and my career," Peno said in the release. "I look forward to working alongside our staff, volunteers, members and community partners to continue building a YMCA that reflects the strength, generosity and spirit of Pearland."

Tacos Toreados in Pearland will close on August 16 due to the planned Broadway Street expansion project by the Texas Department of Transportation, according to a social media post from the business.

The eatery will continue offering catering services as it searches for a new brick-and-mortar location, according to the post.

What happened: “We invite you to stop by during these final weeks to share one last meal with us and help us celebrate the wonderful journey we’ve had together,” the post said. Through its catering services, the eatery offers a variety of tacos, quesadillas, mini tortas and fajitas.

A new laundry pickup and delivery service is now serving customers across the Greater Houston area. LaundryGrab opened in early 2026 and is aimed at helping busy residents who would rather spend time with their families than do laundry.

How it works: The delivery-only service allows customers to place orders online or via the company's app. According to a July 27 emailed statement, workers then collect the laundry from the residents' doorstep, wash and fold or dry clean the items and then deliver them back within a 24- to 48- hour timeframe. Pickup and delivery are free. Services include:

• Washing and folding

• Dry cleaning

• Cleaning household and event linens such as comforters, bedding, sheets, towels and tablecloths

• Same-day service for urgent orders

Starting rates for a wash and fold service are set at approximately $3.95 per pound. Dry cleaning is priced per garment, starting at $2.95 per item.

This summer, Texas is launching a new process to study the viability of data centers and other large projects seeking to connect to the state’s power grid. The process’ strict requirements could deter major industrial projects from coming to the state, experts warn.

The overview: The Electric Reliability Commission of Texas’ new "batch study process" will require that large projects be evaluated in groups, rather than individually. The process was developed in response to Texas’ data center boom.

What they're saying: All projects that would use at least 75 megawatts of electricity will be required to participate in the batch process—including industrial and hydrogen production facilities. However, industrial and manufacturing projects operate differently from data centers and may not be able to meet some of the batch requirements, industry representatives said July 29.

In a state that works to attract major companies and bills itself as business-friendly, that’s a concern, lawmakers said.

"Where are y'all at on trying to differentiate those types of traditional, enterprise, big commercial, large load projects?" Sen. Phil King, R-Weatherford, asked.
