Judson ISD proposes termination of superintendent, appoints interim

On Feb. 4, the Judson ISD board of trustees voted to propose terminating Superintendent Milton "Rob" Fields III's employment contract and have him remain on administrative leave with pay, appointing Mary Duhart-Toppen to serve as interim superintendent. The decision came after the board spent nearly four hours in closed session.

Duhart-Toppen currently serves as the district's deputy superintendent of teaching and learning, according to the district's website.

What you need to know: Board Vice President Amanda Poteet made the motion to propose the termination, which was seconded by board President Monica Ryan. Poteet's motion passed 4-3, with trustees Suzanne Kenoyer, José Macias Jr. and Laura Stanford dissenting.

Kenoyer motioned to appoint Duhart-Toppen to serve as interim superintendent, and Stanford seconded that motion. Kenoyer's motion passed 5-2, with Ryan and Poteet dissenting.

Kung fu studio celebrates 20 years of self-defense in Schertz

A Northeast San Antonio martial arts studio celebrated a big milestone in 2025.

The overview: Kung Jung Mu Sul, located at 1230 Borgfield Road, celebrated its 20-year anniversary in Schertz on Dec. 2. The martial arts studio, led by Program Director Stacey Gary, has been open since 2005.

Kung Jung Mu Sul is a Korean form of martial arts focusing mainly on self-defense from single or multiple attackers.

Other than Schertz, the studio also has gyms in the Thousand Oaks area and the Roger Ranch subdivision of San Antonio.

Classes are available for kids, teens and adults for all skill levels, according to the studio's website.

Final flyover ramp opens at Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange

The Texas Department of Transportation will open the eighth and final flyover ramp at the Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange by 5 a.m., Feb. 5, completing an essential portion of the Loop 1604 North Expansion project. 

The flyover ramp provides an easier connection to westbound Loop 1604 to westbound I-10.

The overview: According to the news release, drivers can access the flyover ramp on Loop 1604 just past Lockhill Selma Road and enter the westbound mainlanes of I-10 past La Cantera Parkway. Construction on the lower level infrastructure will continue at the interchange. With 70% of the interchange complete, the interchange is estimated to be completed by 2027.

The background: Once complete, the five-level interchange will consist of eight flyover ramps, roundabouts, a high-occupancy vehicle lane and other interchange improvements.

Central Texas voters in the March 3 primary election will decide who will be the Democratic candidate in the State Board of Education District 5 race in November.
