A new greenhouse will provide students at Georgetown ISD’s Future Ready Complex access to hands-on learning.

The greenhouse, which is anticipated to open in October, will primarily serve Richarte High School, the culinary arts program and the transitional learning program Bridges 18+.

The project: The greenhouse is expected to begin construction at the end of July and will be located behind the cafeteria in the campus’ northeast corner, GISD Career and Technical Education Director Bretton Schulz said.

The greenhouse will be Americans with Disabilities Act-accessible, Schulz said.

Quote of note: “Greenhouses [and farming] allows for you to be self-sufficient and use the land,” Schulz said. “Regardless of how big of a patch of land we have, it's teaching lifelong skills to our kids. Even if it's not the focus of the class, and it may just be a byproduct, if they can take that with them and be able to provide for themselves in the most cost-efficient way, there's not much better goal in school than that.”

Salt and Waves Salon will open its third area location off Hwy. 29 in Georgetown.

Gov. Greg Abbott named Robert S. Howden, one of his senior advisers and his office's legislative director, as Texas' 116th secretary of state effective July 18. Howden will succeed Secretary of State Jane Nelson, who resigned effective July 17 more than three years after she took office.

As the state's chief elections officer, Howden will be responsible for overseeing the application of Texas election laws and assisting local election officials. The secretary of state's office also manages business records, government rules and regulations, and other official duties.

Following Abbott's appointment, Howden must be confirmed for the position by at least two-thirds of the Texas Senate. The state Legislature's next regular session will begin in January.
