Locally-owned Sugar Mills Taco Co. now open in Sugar Land

Sugar Mills Taco Co. is now serving authentic Mexican cuisine in Sugar Land.

What they offer: Co-owner Abby Flores said the family-run restaurant offers a variety of meat options including chicken fajita, pastor barbacoa, brisket, carne asada, asada de puerco and chicharon, or pork rinds.

The plates are served with flour or corn tortillas that are made in-house daily, she said.

About the owners: Flores founded the restaurant with her husband, Abram. Her parents co-owned La Ideal Bakery at 3310 First St., Ste. F, Rosenberg, for 25 years and helped the couple get started with their own restaurant.

As a former educator, she hopes the restaurant becomes a community gathering space with plans to host financial aid nights and Mother Goose reading sessions for students.

“Our hope is always for it to become a community hub,” she said. "Somewhere people can come, get some good food, but also meet with family and friends.”

Texas launches database tracking local bond projects, tax rate elections

Texans now have a new database to track the results of local bond propositions and tax rate elections, or TREs, in their communities and across the state.

The details: Texas’ Local Government Bond, Tax, and Project Transparency Database was unveiled after state lawmakers passed House Bill 103 this spring. The new law requires the comptroller to compile information about all bonds, tax rate elections and maintenance tax rate changes proposed by local governments in an election, including:

  • Ballot language for all tax-related proposals
  • How each tax measure would impact the local tax rate or debt service
  • The difference between the adopted tax rate and voter-approval tax rate, if applicable
  • The entity’s tax rate for the prior year and the tax rate following the election
  • A list of projects funded by each tax measure
  • The results of each election, including votes for and against a measure

Stay tuned: Local governments have until Jan. 1 to provide information for all tax elections from 2015-2025. In future years, data must be reported by Aug. 7 following each election.
