Cultural corners: Developers aim to make Richardson ‘go-to spot’ for Arab business

Starting with The Arabian Village, several shopping centers in south Richardson are developing around Middle Eastern businesses. Several developers aim to make Richardson a landing spot for Middle Eastern and Arab business in Dallas.

The background: Within the last several years, The Arabian Village and Al Ameera Plaza have welcomed international businesses opening their first American location as well as businesses already established in Texas or Richardson. Developer Adam Shawish also said he brought Texas’ first Yemeni coffee shop to The Arabian Village.

Zooming in: "The Arab community feels represented,” Yemandi Yemeni Cuisine owner Ammar Alashwal said, when they are able to eat food at his restaurant that they haven’t been able to find in Dallas before. In addition to the Arab residents, Alashwal said that it was all of Richardson’s diverse and international communities that made the city the right place for his restaurant.

Quote of note: “[The development] builds on the idea that we’re a foodie city, and that one step beyond that, we’re an international foodie city,” City Manager Don Magner said.

CI Texas
Early voting in Texas’ primary runoff election begins May 18. Here’s what to know.

After dozens of Texas primary races ended without a clear winner in March, candidates for those seats will face off in an overtime round, known as a runoff election, this month. Texans can vote early in the runoff election from May 18-22, with election day May 26.

How it works: State law requires that primary candidates receive more than 50% of the votes cast to advance to a general election.

In the May 26 runoff election, Republican and Democratic voters will choose who they want to represent them in statewide offices, legislative and Congressional seats, the State Board of Education and county-level positions. The winner of each runoff race will appear on the ballot in November.

On the ballot: The statewide Republican runoff races include:

  • U.S. Senate: John Cornyn and Ken Paxton
  • Texas attorney general: Mayes Middleton and Chip Roy
  • Texas railroad commissioner: Jim Wright and Bo French

The statewide Democratic runoffs are:
  • Texas attorney general: Nathan Johnson and Joe Jaworski
  • Texas lieutenant governor: Vikki Goodwin and Marcos Vélez
