Conroe ISD approves policies following state legislation

The Conroe ISD board of trustees has approved 11 new district policies that involve recent laws such as Senate Bill 12, which state lawmakers passed earlier this year. The slate of new education laws includes new legal requirements that aim to expand parental authority on students' moral, religious, educational and medical decisions.

The setup: CISD Superintendent David Vinson led the discussion with the board on how the policy process is conducted, stating there are two types of policy: legal policy to comply with Texas laws and local policy adopted by trustees that can be clarified or expanded.

What to know: The adopted policies include:
  • Board Policy EA: The policy covers where the district will post class syllabuses.
  • Board Policy BED: The policy requires that parents of enrolled students can speak first during public comment.
  • Board Policy FM: The policy pertains to student participation in student activity groups, establishing certain prohibitions and guidelines.

The Woodlands Methodist Church hosts groundbreaking events at new locations

The Woodlands Methodist Church held groundbreaking events Oct. 4-5 for its campuses in Montgomery and Woodforest, the organization stated in a press release. 

What to know: The projects are being led in partnership with Cosmati Architects and Brookstone Construction, with construction at both campuses scheduled to begin in late 2025 to be completed at the end of 2026, according to the release.  

Notable quote: “This new chapter will allow us to make more room for worship, discipleship and ministry in our community," said Rev. Brent Parker, pastor of The Church at Woodforest.

Trilogy by Shea Homes to bring 55-plus resort community to Two Step Farm

Oxland Group announced in an Oct. 23 news release that Two Step Farm in Montgomery County will soon feature the state’s largest 55-plus resort-style community, developed by Trilogy by Shea Homes.

What we know: Set on 160 acres within the 2,020-acre master-planned development, Trilogy at Two Step Farm will include four home collections ranging from 1,500-2,800 square feet, with prices starting in the $400,000s. The neighborhood will feature exclusive resort-style amenities designed to promote wellness, social connection and recreation, according to the release.

“Trilogy is the ideal partner to bring our vision to life, creating a multigenerational community unlike anything else in the country,” Oxland Group co-President Tom Woliver said in the release. “It’s planned around a vibrant village with exceptional dining options and an innovative wellness center, offering the best mix of 55+ and multigenerational living.”

YES Prep Public Schools launches 4-year, $80M campaign to expand across Houston

YES Prep Public Schools has launched a new four-year, $80 million campaign dubbed “The Power of YES," officials announced in an Oct. 23 news release.

The gist: The campaign will allow the Houston charter school system to invest in technology and facilities while working toward becoming an "A"-rated district. Per the release, the initiative will:

  • Add 5,000 new school seats
  • Complete YES Prep’s full pre-K-12 feeder pattern
  • Fund the construction of six new schools
  • Rebuild three of YES Prep’s oldest campuses
  • Invest in innovative programs, bilingual education and tools that prepare students for college, careers and leadership

New CEO of Children's Memorial Hermann announced

Memorial Hermann Health System announced in a Oct. 23 news release that Guy B. Giesecke will take over as senior vice president and chief executive officer of Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital.

What we know: Formerly the chief executive officer over the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Giesecke will transition to his new role with Memorial Hermann immediately.
