Gideon Math & Reading Center now teaching in Cypress

A new math and reading tutoring center is now serving the Cypress-Fairbanks area.

The details: Gideon Math & Reading Center aims to provide children ages 4 and up with a step-by-step curriculum tailored to their abilities following a placement evaluation. The program includes in-person visits to the center twice a week, with homework completed daily to help refine skills, according to its website.

As previously reported by Community Impact, the franchise has locations nationwide including three others in the Greater Houston area within Katy, Spring Branch and Richmond, according to its website.

BTX Studio to open in Cypress

BTX Studio owners Jeremy and Cassee Fong said they have plans to open the injectable practice on January 10.

The details: BTX Studio is a practice offering several beauty treatments including botox, dysport, jeuveau and letybo, according to the website. With 11 years of experience, Jeremy Fong has a background in neurosurgery and orthopedics where he has performed procedures and administered thousands of injections, per the website.

Charter school system launches online high school courses for students statewide

Texas charter system Harmony Public Schools launched a new virtual learning platform on Jan. 5 that allows students across the state to take high school courses online.

The overview: The Harmony Online Learning program includes dozens of courses aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills standards, all of which are self-paced, according to a news release.

More details: Students can choose from dozens of courses in core subjects, electives, Advanced Placement and Career and Technical Education, according to the program’s website. The offerings aim to help students complete credit recovery, get ahead with their requirements and access courses not available at their home campus. Credit earned through Harmony may be applied toward high school graduation requirements depending on local district policies, per the release.

One more thing: Interested families can enroll online, and spring courses begin Jan. 12, per the release. The cost of tuition per course is $325, a spokesperson from Harmony Public Schools told Community Impact.

St. Lukes The Vintage names chief nursing officer, operations director

St. Luke's Health-The Vintage Hospital officials announced a new chief nursing officer and director of operations is have been selected in a Jan. 5 news release.

The details: Hospital officials said Jennifer Cook was selected as the chief nursing officer and Lee Wright as the director of operations at the location in Vintage Park.

In their words: "We are delighted to recognize the outstanding contributions and proven leadership of Jennifer Cook and Lee Wright," said Elizabeth Ortega, president of St. Luke's Health-The Vintage Hospital. "Their dedication to our mission, combined with their extensive experience, will be instrumental in driving our continued success and ensuring the highest quality of care for our community."

6 transportation projects that could impact commutes across the Greater Houston area

Six major roadway projects are being planned, are underway or will kick off soon across the Greater Houston area.

Upcoming projects
1. Mykawa Road widening
Project: Construction on Mykawa Road will consist of roughly 3 miles of a four-lane divided boulevard with storm drainage, signals, lighting, landscaping and a 10-foot shared-use path, among other features.
Update: 90% of design submittals have been received and are being reviewed by Pearland city staff and the Texas Department of Transportation. TxDOT is bidding, constructing and managing the project.

  • Timeline: construction slated to start in 2028 with a completion in 2030
  • Cost: $21.4 million

2. 
Lake Woodlands Drive at Gosling Road intersection improvements
Project: The project will extend turn lanes from eastbound Lake Woodlands Drive onto northbound Gosling Road. It will also extend turn lanes from westbound Lake Woodlands Drive onto southbound Gosling Road.
Update: Engineering design was complete in early December and utility coordination was ongoing, Montgomery County Precinct 3 officials said.
  • Timeline: Construction will begin in early 2026.
  • Cost: $40,000 (design)

The overview: As Community Impact enters its third decade, it’s returning to its roots of growth and deeper reader connections. The “Patron” program, which began in 2020 by reader demand, has relaunched as InCIder.

“This relaunch represents our renewed commitment to readers who support our local news,” CEO John Garrett said. “Beyond funding great journalism, we also want to reward our InCIders and build deeper connections with them, creating a true sense of community around the work we do.”

Event details: As part of the new program, Community Impact is hosting InCIder Hours across the state, events designed to celebrate and engage the company’s top supporters.

Houston’s first InCIder Hour will take place from 5:30-7 p.m. Jan. 21 at Community Impact’s Houston headquarters, 16300 Northwest Freeway, Jersey Village.

Guests will have the opportunity to network with fellow InCIders, meet Community Impact staff and attend a moderated real estate-focused panel.
