British Swim School now offering small group swimming lessons in Cypress

British Swim School officials confirmed via email the swim school opened on July 7 and is now offering swim lessons for all ages.

What they offer: Founded in England in 1981, per the website, the British Swim School provides gentle teaching methods and a survival-first approach to help people of all experience levels become safer and stronger swimmers. During small sessions classes with up to six students per instructor, British Swim School teaches water acclamation, water survival and stroke development skills.

Cy-Fair ISD board to review course material recommendations at October meetings

The Cy-Fair ISD board of trustees will discuss math instruction, library materials and a small handful of policy revisions during its Oct. 2 work session and Oct. 6 regular board meeting. 

Items of note: The board will take up a routine list of agenda items during its Oct. 2 work session and Oct. 6 regular board meeting, with a couple of policy revisions on the table, including:

  • Approving math instructional materials for grades K-8 and Algebra I
  • Consider revisions to the district's child abuse and neglect policies as required by state law 
  • Consider approving the acquisition of procured or donated library materials, which were posted to the district’s website Sept. 5
  • Consider revisions to the required instruction policies for middle and high school students, specifically pertaining to Olympic-caliber training programs

Target launches first-of-its-kind accessible self-checkout for visually impaired individuals

According to a Sept. 26 press release, Target has launched a first-of-its-kind accessible self-checkout experience designed for guests with disabilities, including those who are blind or have low vision.

The self-checkouts will roll out nationwide beginning this holiday season and in early 2026 as part of Target's ongoing checkout improvements, according to the release.

What to expect: Per the release, the innovation is a guest-first design that primarily supports people who are visually impaired while supporting those with motor disabilities.

The technology works with Target’s existing self-checkout system and includes:

  • Braille and high-contrast button icons
  • A headphone jack with adjustable volume controls
  • Physical navigation buttons and a dedicated information key

Quote of note: "Target's new accessible self-checkout experience is unique not only because it is a first in the industry, but because it was designed through collaboration with the blind, incorporating our technical expertise and lived experience," Mark Riccobono, president of the National Federation of the Blind, said via news release.

Houston airports first in Texas to offer free ASL services to passengers

William P. Hobby and George Bush Intercontinental airports, as of September, are offering an on-demand American Sign Language interpreting service, Aira ASL, to passengers, according to a Sept. 18 news release from Houston Airports.

The service is free to passengers, and is the first of its kind to be offered in Texas, the news release notes. 

The overview: Aira ASL is an app that connects users to professional ASL interpreters from a live video feed.

Diving in deeper: The interpreter, according to the release, can assist travelers with some of the following throughout the airport:

  • Check-in counters
  • Gates
  • Restrooms
  • Concessions
  • Baggage claim

Quote of note: “Accessibility is not optional. It is a core part of how we serve the public,” Houston Airports Director of Aviation Jim Szczesniak said in the news release. “With this launch, we are advancing our passenger experience strategy and setting a new benchmark for inclusive travel.”
