Friendswood City Council will consider whether to award a $1.6 million contract for flood mitigation on sanitary sewer lift Stations No. 1 and 17 at an April 6 meeting.

The details: Friendswood City Council will consider whether to award the $1.6 million contract to Dickinson-based Branch Construction Group.

The backstory: The city's sanitary sewer system sustained severe damage during Hurricane Harvey and currently, Station No. 1 is operating on bypass pumping because of outdated electrical infrastructure, according to city documents.

PREVIEW: Manvel to hold public hearing on comprehensive, thoroughfare plans

Manvel City Council is set to hold a public hearing at its April 6 meeting on the final adoption of the city’s comprehensive and major thoroughfare plans.

The plans provide the city with direction for land use, transportation, infrastructure and economic development, according to city documents.

What you need to know: City officials first introduced drafts of both plans during its Oct. 6 meeting, as previously reported by Community Impact.

What’s next: Manvel City Council is scheduled to meet at 5 p.m. April 6 at Manvel City Hall, located at 20031 Hwy. 6, Manvel.

DATA: Greater Houston-area school districts saw student homelessness rise from 2021-26; foster care trends uneven

Student homelessness increased across many Greater Houston-area school districts over the last five school years, while foster care numbers showed a more uneven pattern from district to district, according to Texas Education Agency data released March 6.

The overview: Community Impact reviewed TEA data for 28 Greater Houston-area school districts to compare the number of enrolled students identified as experiencing homelessness or living in foster care in 2025-26 versus 2021-22. In the foster care data, Fort Bend ISD and Aldine ISD had the highest counts in 2025-26. 

In the homelessness data, Houston ISD stood above the rest of the districts shown, nearing 6,000 students in 2025-26. Other districts, including Alief ISD, Clear Creek ISD, Conroe ISD and Fort Bend ISD, all showed higher homeless student counts in 2025-26 than in 2021-22, while several others were flat or down.
