Hays County residents to vote on proposed Hospital District

The Hays County Commissioners Court acknowledged the presentation of a voter petition that will allow residents to vote on the potential creation of a Chapter 281 hospital district during an Aug. 25 meeting.

The gist: The voter petition held 142 signatures verified by the county election office and tax assessor, passing the 100 signature threshold required to automatically call for an election.

If approved by voters, the district would be responsible for providing medical aid and hospital care for all residents determined to be indigent or needy. The measure will not appear on the November 2026 general election ballot, but instead be present on the ballot of a future election.

Commissioners pushed back on the proposition and the lack of discussion with industry professionals and residents prior to the presentation of the petition. The acknowledgment of the petition was accepted in a 4-1 vote.

Looking forward: The commissioners tabled two related agenda items during the meeting. They must still vote to officially call for a special election on the creation of the hospital district.

Therapy Center of Buda expands access to care in new location

The Therapy Center of Buda, or TCOB, has expanded access to neurodiversity-affirming therapy in the Hays County area by moving to a new location at 3480 Jack C. Hays Trail in Buda.

Zooming in: The locally owned therapy practice has operated since 2008 and was previously located at 1750 Ranch to Market Road 967, Ste. A, in Buda. The new office’s location makes its services more accessible for families in Kyle and northern Hays County, according to a news release.

“Therapy Center of Buda has been part of this community since 2008, and remaining connected to Buda was incredibly important to us,” Amy Grant, owner and clinical director of TCOB, said in the release. “At the same time, Kyle is growing incredibly quickly, and we know many families are traveling farther than they should have to for affirming therapy. Being right at the edge of these two communities puts us in a really unique position to serve both.”

Q&A: Meet the candidates on the ballot for the US House District 35

Carlos De La Cruz and Johnny C. Garcia will appear on the ballot in the November election for the U.S. House of Representatives District 35 seat, taking place Nov. 3.

Zooming in: The U.S. House District 35 seat stretches from Austin to San Antonio, along the I-35 corridor, according to Ballotpedia.

The current District 35 representative is Democrat Greg Casar, who ran for the U.S. House District 37 seat in the March primary elections and received 80.75% of the vote, securing a spot on the November ballot.

Early voting begins Oct. 19.

Texas Department of Insurance must work to reduce home insurance costs, Gov. Abbott says

The Texas Department of Insurance must take action to promote competition and “prohibit excessive or unfairly discriminatory rate setting" in the state's homeowners insurance market, Gov. Greg Abbott said Aug. 24.

The background: Texans are paying the fourth-highest home insurance premiums in the nation, Community Impact previously reported. State data shows that the average Texas home insurance premium nearly doubled from $1,791 in 2016 to $3,506 in 2025.

The details: Abbott asked the TDI to prohibit insurers from using the age of a home and homeowners' personal data when setting rates; create a task force targeting insurance fraud; study the impact of inflated insurance claims; and require insurers to consider a homeowner's participation in a roof fortification program when writing policies.

Another perspective: "Under Greg Abbott, Texas has been one of the most expensive states in the country to own and maintain a home," Gina Hinojosa, the Democratic candidate for Texas governor, said in a statement. "If Abbott really wanted to lower costs, he would have done it in the last 12 years."
