Richardson officials propose $1.9M transportation, intersection projects

Richardson aims to upgrade traffic signals, improve intersection capacity and extend several trails in the city in fiscal year 2026-27.

The overview: Mark Nelson, director of transportation and mobility, proposed a $1.9 million transportation and mobility budget for FY 2026-27, which is on par with the budget for 2025-26, at the June 15 City Council meeting.

Transportation and mobility covers work on traffic signals, streetlights, school zones, signs, pavement markings and bike lanes, Nelson said. The majority of the budget will go toward signs and markings, with some funds set aside for signals and street lighting.

A closer look: Nelson also covered the city’s traffic work plan for FY 2026-27, which will include traffic signal replacement with accessibility upgrades on eight intersections, as well as design work on eight additional signals. The city will also initiate a project to update school zone flashers across the city.

East-West Connector at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport opens

A 1.65-mile stretch of road within the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport campus opened June 12.

The $30.8 million East-West Connector was first envisioned nearly 20 years ago to connect transportation in the airport’s southern corridor, according to a news release.

The details: The roadway extends from Rental Car Drive to the Harwood Drive/SH 360 intersection and will connect drivers to the Southgate Plaza, near Terminal E and the under-construction Terminal F.

The project was funded through federal transportation programs and administered by the North Central Texas Council of Governments, which provided approximately 80% of the funding. There was a funding agreement between DFW Airport and the Texas Department of Transportation Fort Worth District for the remaining 20%.

Also of note: Mario Sinacola & Sons Excavating Inc. was the contractor for the project, according to previous reporting.
