We Are Blood announces strategic plan to expand care

We Are Blood, the sole nonprofit blood center in Central Texas, announced its multiyear strategic plan Feb. 3. The “Every Drop Counts” plan focuses the blood supplier’s efforts on meeting the region’s growing demand for blood products through increased collection and delivery.

The overview: The organization currently operates four donation centers and plans to add two more, as detailed in the “Every Drop Counts” plan. A center in Kyle, located at 19037 I-35, Ste. 2, is scheduled to open this summer, and a sixth location will be developed before 2030.

The strategic plan outlines the expansion of services and launch of additional programs, including:

  • Expansion of mobile blood collection bus fleet
  • Establishment of a second processing center
  • The region’s first Pediatric Stem Cell Transplant Program, in partnership with Dell Children’s Medical Center
  • In-house molecular testing capabilities
  • New leadership development programs and recruitment strategies

The impact: The “Every Drop Counts” plan is expected to increase the speed of blood product delivery to medical partners, improve overall patient care and address local blood supply shortages.

UT Law School residence hall to break ground in March

The University of Texas at Austin has plans to build a residence hall dedicated for law students at East Dean Keeton Street and Medical Arts Street, according to a university news release.

About the project: The Texas Law residence hall will provide:

  • Over 300 beds
  • A library-style reading room
  • A cafe
  • A gym
  • Two roof decks
It is located directly across the street from the Texas Law Schools, and will break ground in March, the news release states. Construction is scheduled to be completed ahead of residents moving in August 2028.

What they’re saying: “As changes in the Austin rental market increased costs for some students while driving others to commute long distances, we saw this as a challenge that could also be an opportunity,” Bobby Chesney, dean of the UT School of Law, said in the news release. “The residence hall will deliver on that with a remarkable boost to community, value and proximity for our students.”
