Construction on Roanoke parking garage to begin, bring 430 parking spaces to Oak Street

Construction on a new parking garage in downtown Roanoke is scheduled to start Feb. 23 and bring 430 parking spots to Oak Street, according to a news release from the city of Roanoke.

What you need to know: The parking garage will be located on 0.902 acres at 102 S. US 377. The current parking lot will close Feb. 21 to allow for fencing and erosion control installation, per the release.

Construction is anticipated to finish in March 2027, Public Engagement Manager Sandra Pettigrew said. During construction, nearby properties can expect:

  • Increased construction-related noise and lighting
  • Heavy equipment and truck activity
  • Temporary lane closures or traffic adjustments along US 377 and nearby streets
  • Changes to parking access in the immediate area

More details: 
The parking garage will be five stories tall and cost the city $22 million, which will be paid for using a certificate of obligations bond.

FedEx to lay off 89 at Alliance location in Fort Worth

FedEx is laying off nearly 100 employees at a location in the Alliance area of Fort Worth.

What's happening? A filing with the Texas Work Force Commission, submitted Dec. 29, noted 89 employees will be laid off March 2. The Working Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN notice, stated the change will happen at the FedEx Ship Center location.

Documents state that the FedEx reorganization initiative, which began in 2022 to improve efficiency and profits, is the reason behind the layoffs.

Impacted employees can request transfers to other FedEx locations, take severance or take leave while seeking other roles in the company.

Project: A construction and realignment project for the 4-lane Bloomdale Road will create a new connection at SH 5. A multilane roundabout will also be constructed at the intersection of Bloomdale Road and Spur 195.
Update: Design work on the project is 30% completed.

  • Timeline: May 2025-late 2026 (design), construction to begin in spring 2027
  • Cost: $6.6 million

2. Timber Valley Drive and Fairfield Lane reconstruction
Project: Both projects include the replacement of the street, sidewalks, sewer lines and water lines. The Timber Valley project will take place between Cross Timbers Road and River Oaks Drive. Fairfield Lane construction will occur between Timber Valley and Summer Trail.
Update: Town officials plan to send the project out to bid in February.
  • Timeline: spring 2026-summer 2027
  • Cost: $6.93 million
