Construction begins on $64 million Burnet Road safety, mobility improvements

City of Austin officials held a groundbreaking March 5 to kick off efforts to redevelop Burnet Road with $64 million worth of various safety and mobility improvements.

The overview: The project is slated to reach completion in three segments between mid-2027 and late 2028, bringing upgraded traffic signals, pedestrian and bike infrastructure, bus stop improvements, and more. Austin’s 2016 Mobility Bond allocated $482 million toward corridor improvements across the city, with Burnet Road being one of the nine corridors identified.

The local impact: Dozens of businesses line Burnet Road, and some owners have voiced concerns with the city’s communication about the project.

“The reality right now makes it so any non-car-based transportation ... is dangerous," said Tom Rosen, owner of Rosen's Bagel Co. along C3. "I think most business owners will be in favor of [the project], but we would love to ... have a little bit more proactive communication.”

Looking ahead: City officials said all business access will be maintained throughout construction, and that the project is in-line with District 7's broader vision.

Tony’s Jamaican Food blends family recipes with modern spices in Pflugerville

Tony Scott learned how to cook when he was a kid, growing up in Jamaica. He stood next to his mom in the kitchen, sampling dishes as he learned how to chop ingredients, wash up and season food.

Cooking became a passion for Scott, one he carried through his 2003 move to Austin, where he would open his first restaurant less than a decade later. The eatery expanded to Pflugerville in 2018 after customers asked Scott to venture into North Austin.

Tony’s Jamaican Food serves a selection of meats, including curry chicken, jerk pork, shrimp, and oxtail—a fan favorite. Many of the recipes he uses today are adapted from his mother’s cooking. All meats are served with rice, peas, steamed vegetables and fried plantains.

WilCo Emergency Communications becomes first triple-accredited center in Texas

The International Academies of Emergency Dispatch awarded the Williamson County Emergency Communications Center the designation of Emergency Medical Dispatch Accredited Center of Excellence, officials announced at a March 3 commissioners court meeting.

This award makes the department the first Tri-ACE, or three-time Accredited Center of Excellence, emergency communications center in Texas.

What it means: Williamson County Emergency Communications manages 911 and nonemergency calls, and dispatches critical care and specialized operations for law enforcement, fire and medical agencies. The department serves a growing population of 750,000 people and dispatches for about 28 agencies, officials said at the March 3 meeting.

The award adds to two others that the emergency communications center has received—for emergency police dispatch and emergency fire dispatch. These three designations make the center the first in Texas and 32nd in the world to achieve a Tri-ACE distinction.

How it works: As an accredited center of excellence in emergency medical dispatch, Williamson County Emergency Communications meets the academy’s highest level of standards, according to a county news release.
