Q&A: Meet the 2 candidates running for Fulshear City Council Position 5

Two candidates are running for the open District 5 position on Fulshear City Council in the upcoming May 2 election.

The background: The opening comes after Fulshear City Council voted Sept. 16 to redistrict after a study showed the city had nearly doubled its population since the 2020 census, causing uneven representation among districts, Community Impact reported. The approval triggered a required election for all council members and the mayor's seat.

The details: The position is currently held by incumbent Abhi Utturkar, who was moved into District 2 during the redistricting process.

Here's what we asked them:

  • Why did you choose to run for Fulshear City Council?
  • What is your top priority if elected to represent the citizens of Fulshear?
  • What do you think is the most pressing issue for the city of Fulshear, and what will you do to address it?
  • How should the city prepare for and manage its growing population?
  • What would you do to prioritize economic development in the city?

Coastal Prairie Conservancy preserves final 221 acres of Three Oaks Farm

The Coastal Prairie Conservancy has preserved the final 221 acres of Three Oaks Farm, closing a gap in the Katy Prairie Preserve, officials announced in a March 23 news release.

The big picture: Three Oaks Farm links the Indiangrass Preserve and Hebert Reservoir together, allowing water, wildlife and working lands to “function more naturally” throughout the landscape, per the release.

The addition fortifies almost 20,000 acres of prairie, wetlands and working lands in western Houston to serve several key functions, including:

  • Decreasing flood risk
  • Supporting wildlife
  • Maintaining the region’s agricultural heritage
  • Providing the public with recreational opportunities such as birdwatching and hiking

Zooming out: As one of the biggest nature preserve systems in Greater Houston, the Katy Prairie Preserve cultivates rice farming, ranching and wildlife, in addition to giving visitors one of the last places to explore historic coastal prairies, per the release.

Toyota Center to see major upgrades in $180M renovation

The Harris County-Houston Sports Authority announced April 8 that the home of the Houston Rockets will receive $180 million in upgrades through fall 2027.

Mapping it out: During a presentation to the HCHSA board of directors, Gretchen Sheirr, president of business operations with the Rockets, announced significant interior and exterior changes coming to the Toyota Center, which opened in 2003.

“When you look at what has happened in those 23 years, and you think about what will happen in the next 23 years, we’re really excited about it,” Sheirr said.

Those upgrades include:

  • 3,100 square feet extended main entrance with a glass facade
  • New atrium upon entering the main entrance, with space for gathering
  • Members lounge over the new entrance
  • Expanded team store with an additional set of doors
  • Standing room and general admission space for events
  • Heightened suites that will raise ceilings about 18 inches for more space

Interior work will begin in April, with exterior work beginning July 1, dependent on when the NBA season ends for the Rockets, project officials said.
