Drainage projects in Bellaire to see influx of activity this summer

Bellaire City Council members received a quarterly update on the city's Regional Drainage Improvement program during a May 18 City Council session. The update given by officials with Quiddity Engineering and Deputy Program Manager Casey Goforth showed that all projects are currently on schedule, with several next steps set for this summer.

What's happening: The drainage program, also known as the Cypress Ditch project, is a mitigation project to reduce flooding in Bellaire during heavy rain events. The program consists of three different phases: south basin projects, north basin projects and channel projects.

As of May 18, items that have been completed for the program include:

  • Securing the Beechnut St. Car Wash for demolition

  • Launching the Cypress Ditch Program website

Going forward: Next steps that are expected to occur this summer include starting construction on the south basin demolition project, bidding for the south basin project, receiving a design contract for the demolition and decommissioning of the wastewater treatment plant and completing a phasing workshop for the Cypress Ditch Project.
