100-bed addition planned at Montgomery County mental health facility

Construction is underway—and officials expect it to wrap in December—on an expansion at the Montgomery County Mental Health Treatment Facility in Conroe that will add 100 inpatient beds and increase the site’s capacity for competency-restoration treatment.
Montgomery County Commissioners have already taken additional steps to keep the project moving by allocating funds for commissioning services.

The overview: Officials and community leaders broke ground Aug. 18 on an addition that will expand the facility, which currently operates 100 beds, according to Recovery Solutions, the behavioral health provider that manages the hospital through a public-private partnership with the county and the state.

The expansion will focus on serving justice-involved individuals a court has found incompetent to stand trial, Recovery Solutions Hospital Administrator Jeff Rone said.

Satterfield & Pontikes Construction, the project’s contractor, describes the work as a 51,085-square-foot expansion designed to accommodate the new beds. The firm also said the added space will expand the hospital’s reach from about 3,300 patients from 79 counties to 4,300 patients from 140 counties.

Tomball City Council advances $2.3M TEDC funding plan tied to future city campus

Tomball City Council voted Feb. 2 authorizing Tomball Economic Development Corp. to spend up to $2.3 million to support property acquisition for a future public safety complex.

What this means: The approval allows TEDC economic development agreement funds to be used as direct incentives or expenditures for property acquisition tied to the planned complex.

In a memo to council, TEDC Executive Director Kelly Violette said TEDC received a request letter from City Manager David Esquivel seeking one-time funding help for property acquisition efforts related to a future public safety complex and City Hall facility near 810 W. Main St.

Diving in deeper: The attached grant agreement states TEDC would provide a $2.3 million grant within 60 days of the agreement’s effective date, and the city would use the funding for land acquisition and for design and construction of a new facility that includes headquarters for Tomball’s police and fire departments.

Coastal Texas Project secures $5M, largest federal contribution yet

The Coastal Texas Project, also known as the Ike Dike, received $5 million in federal funding, the largest single federal investment in the project since Congress authorized the project in 2022.

The overview: The $34 billion project aims to protect Houston’s critical energy and shipping corridors from storm damage by building a system of gates and dune systems designed to mitigate storm surge, according to previous reporting by Community Impact

The background: The 87th Texas Legislature established the GCPD in 2021, and it serves as the state sponsor for the project, according to the release.

Although the project was authorized in 2022, funding has been slow to come in, and the $5 million marks the largest single federal investment to date, according to the release.

Quote of note: “Texas is home to the largest concentration of oil and gas infrastructure in the United States, and safeguarding our coast from catastrophic storms protects every American,” Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham said in the news release.
