Georgetown ISD leaders discussed possible strategies to provide teachers with pay raises if the district’s voter-approval tax rate election, or VATRE, fails.

What are the options? During the district’s most recent board workshop, GISD leaders explored several options to raise revenue for compensation increases if the VATRE fails, including:

• Increasing class sizes

• Replacing the district’s partnership with the YMCA for after-school care with an in-house alternative

• Reducing student programming, such as theater, sports and other extracurriculars

• Reducing travel, which includes field trips and trips for teacher development

• Reducing non-classroom staff

• Reducing funding for teacher supplies and training

• Increasing school meal prices by $1

Diving in deeper: District leaders raised several concerns and questions, with much of the conversation centering on replacing the district’s partnership with the YMCA, increasing class sizes and cutting funding for teacher supplies.

Assessing the need: A recent financial audit of the district revealed that average pay for both GISD teachers and administrators falls below state averages.

Williamson County officials are seeking applications for a new Precinct 1 Constable, following Williamson County Precinct 1 Constable Mickey Chance's resignation, effective Sept. 30.

How it works: The Williamson County Commissioners Court will appoint a new constable to fill the position until the November 2028 election.

Why it matters: Constables are law enforcement officials elected to four year terms in each precinct. They execute court orders from county and state courts, which most often include arrest warrants, protective orders and evictions, according to county documents.

To strengthen consumer protections, the Texas Department of Insurance is asking state lawmakers to consider adjusting when new home and auto insurance rates are implemented.

What's happening: Texas currently operates under a "file-and-use" system, allowing insurance companies to begin using new rates immediately after they are filed, regardless of whether the TDI has reviewed them.

In a Sept. 14 letter detailing actions the department is taking to address Texas' high home insurance costs, Insurance Commissioner Amanda Crawford suggested that the legislature look into "adding a delay between a rate filing and its use in the market." Under the current system, if the TDI finds an issue with a new insurance rate, there is "limited" redress for affected policyholders if that rate is already in effect.

The background: Crawford's letter comes after Gov. Greg Abbott directed the TDI to take affordability-focused actions in an Aug. 24 letter.

Texans paid the nation's fourth-highest home insurance premiums at the end of 2025, according to previous Community Impact reporting.
