Denton officials to vote on public hearings for data center moratorium, development code updates

Denton City Council could move toward a possible moratorium on the development of data centers.

The topic was discussed during an Aug. 4 work session, and council will vote on setting a public hearing date on the moratorium during its Aug. 18 meeting. Council members also discussed implementing stricter development rules for data centers, which will also require public hearings.

What’s happening? A moratorium is a temporary pause that would limit new data center development, according to a presentation from Charlie Rosendahl, Denton’s director of development services.

City Council members will use the public hearings to gather community feedback on the development of data centers, which will help them decide on whether they should vote on a moratorium, according to the presentation.

Officials will vote on the moratorium during its Aug. 18 meeting and could set the date for that first public hearing.

Denton ISD gives out more than 500 Gold Cards in first 2 days

Denton ISD officially launched its Gold Card Program Aug. 3, and over the course of two days, the district provided more than 500 cards to members of the district’s community, according to a DISD news release.

Breaking it down: The program allows DISD residents and student family members who are 60 and older free general admission to home school events, according to previous reporting.

"The response has been incredible," DISD Superintendent Susannah O'Bara said. "To see more than 500 community members walk through our doors in the first two days tells us something we've always known. Our community cares deeply about our students and wants to be part of their journey."

What else? Gold Cards are still available for eligible community members Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Stephens Building within DISD's central offices at 1307 N. Locust St. in Denton.

3 Dallas Love Field updates: federal funding, new route, Amazon partnership

The Federal Aviation Administration will invest $23.7 million in Dallas Love Field Airport to enhance the travel experience for families.

Southwest Airlines will add new routes out of Love Field starting in early 2027, and Amazon Web Services is partnering with Southwest Airlines for technology improvements.

Federal Aviation Administration investments: According to a news release, the FAA grant will be used to reconstruct passenger boarding bridges, making it easier for families with small children to board and deplane.

The grant is funded through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. More than $5 billion has been allocated since 2022, a year after former President Joe Biden signed it into law, authorizing $550 billion in new investments and programs.

Amazon Web Services: Southwest Airlines and Amazon Web Services will work on a transition from an on-premises environment to a cloud-based, artificial intelligence- and agent-enabled architecture by 2028, according to a news release.

Southwest Airlines: Southwest Airlines will add a new route from Love Field to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport. The route starts March 11, 2027.
