Roanoke Council approves office building, tables apartment complex for Oak Street

Roanoke Council approved the construction of an office building and discussed apartment development on Oak Street at the Jan. 13 meeting.

What happened?: Council approved a site plan to develop offices on a 0.74-acre parcel located at 905 North Oak Street.

The building will be one story, 3,550 square feet and hold 24 people, according to city documents.

More details: A special use permit for the construction of a new Magnolia apartment complex was tabled unanimously at the Jan. 13 council meeting.

If this apartment complex is approved, it would be Magnolia’s third apartment complex in downtown Roanoke, with one apartment building located at 601 N. Oak Street and the second located at 108 US 377.

What they’re saying: Mayor Scooter Gierisch, council member David Brundage and council member Bryan Moyers spoke in opposition to the apartment complex.

A new chocolate shop, Especially Sweet Gourmet Chocolate Boutique, is now open Keller.

The details: The sweets shop offers a variety of chocolates like macadamia, fudge lovers and mousse, according to its website.

Especially Sweet Gourmet Chocolate Boutique is owned by Mike and Aspen Calhoun, who manage the shop with their son, Shane. It’s a place for Shane, who was diagnosed with Autism when he was 4, to work and participate with the community, according to the boutique website.

What else? Especially Sweet opened in the former brick-and-mortar location of clothing boutique Swanky Chic.

A winter storm watch is in effect for the Dallas-Fort Worth area with sleet expected to begin Friday night.

What you need to know: Widespread wintry precipitation, with the majority being sleet, is expected throughout Saturday and potentially into Sunday morning.

"Dangerously cold temperatures" are forecasted to begin overnight Friday into Saturday, with temperatures anticipated to drop as low as 11 or 12 degrees Saturday night into Sunday, officials said. Along with the cold temperatures, wind chills overnight Saturday into Sunday could sit between 0 and -10 degrees.
