Several Dallas-Fort Worth school districts announced school closures Jan. 26 ahead of an arctic winter storm that will sweep the state this weekend.

What residents need to know: As of Jan. 23, the following school districts and colleges have announced that they will be closed, including:

  • Keller ISD
  • Northwest ISD
  • Carroll ISD
  • Grapevine-Colleyville ISD
  • Tarrant County College

Ice expected to accumulate from freezing rain this weekend, winter storm warning in effect

The Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex is under a winter storm warning from 6 p.m Friday until Sunday at noon. 

Major takeaways: An Arctic cold front moved into the region early Friday with cold rain expected to turn into a wintry mix in the evening. Freezing rain and sleet will spread southward overnight from Friday into Saturday, according to the National Weather Service's current forecasts. The precipitation is expected to transition into all sleet in North Texas Saturday afternoon with a mix of snow and sleet anticipated Sunday morning. 

Through Sunday evening, the DFW area could see anywhere from one-quarter inch to a half inch of ice accumulation. Residents can expect icy roads, trees and power lines, per the NWS.

More than 1,300 flights in, out of Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, Love Field altered by winter weather

Dallas Love Field Airport and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport have seen a large number of cancellations and delayed flights due to the expected impact of Winter Storm Fern.

Zooming in: More than 1,300 flights were cancelled or delayed between Jan. 23 and Jan. 24. According to Flightaware.com, 102 flights into DFW Airport and 29 into Dallas Love Field were cancelled Jan. 23, which accounted for 10% and 9%, respectively, of flights into the airports.

As of 3:30 p.m. Jan. 23, there were 96 delayed landings into DFW Airport and six into Love Field. Travellers leaving both airports had fewer cancellations or delays.

Stay tuned: The largest number of cancellations for flights in and out of those airports are on Jan. 24, according to FlightAware.

Leaving DFW Airport, more than 600 flights have been cancelled, while nearly 600 flights that were supposed to land at DFW Airport are now also cancelled. Love Field’s numbers include 90 flights out canceled and 90 flights into Dallas canceled as of 3:30 p.m. Jan. 23.

Denton officials prepare warming centers, safety precautions ahead of extreme weather

Update: Jan. 23, 2:54 p.m.
Denton officials announced Friday afternoon that several city services will be closed or have amended hours throughout the weekend in preparation for Winter Storm Fern. These facilities include:

  • The Denton landfill will be closed beginning at noon Jan. 24.
  • The Home Chemical Collection at the Denton landfill will be closed Jan. 24-25.
  • All city recreation facilities, including senior centers, will be closed Jan. 24-Jan. 25.
  • All Denton public libraries will be closed Jan. 24-25 and all pre-scheduled programming is canceled.
  • The Denton Animal Shelter will be closed to the public Jan. 24-25. Staff will be onsite each day to provide care for housed animals. Call out services will be limited to emergency calls only during this time.
If a bus pass is needed to reach an overnight shelter, they are available at city libraries, recreation facilities and fire stations. Since the libraries and recreation centers will be closed Jan. 24-25, bus passes should be obtained from those locations Jan. 23.
