Roxie's serves up Southern staples with nostalgic style in Buda

Salt Lick BBQ owner Scott Roberts grew up eating at his grandma Roxie’s house on Sundays after church. The Southern comfort eatery, named after Roberts' grandmother, honors her and her legacy of home cooking in Hays County.

"I was trying to recreate that experience of going to her house and having a meal," Roberts said.

What's on the menu: The menu at Roxie's features a variety of starters, sandwiches and entrees, from deviled eggs to fried chicken.

For those interested in a family-style meal, Roxie’s offers “The Experience,” which is designed for sharing

In their own words: "One of the best memories I have [at Roxie's] is the first batch of biscuits that came out of the oven and they were correct," Roberts said. "They had risen up, they were the perfect color ... it was all there ... she did not write any of the recipes down, so we spent a long time perfecting them."

Texas State launches live pregame show to provide students will work experience

The Texas State University School of Journalism and Mass Communication launched a live football pregame show that gives students hands-on experience producing sports media.

The gist: The first show, titled Bobcat Game Day, aired Sept. 12 on YouTube before the football team’s first home game against the University of Texas at San Antonio. The show lets students produce media for a public audience.

Bobcat Game Day will serve as a season-long initiative to bring faculty, students, staff and university partners together for live pregame coverage throughout the university’s first season in the Pac-12 conference, according to a news release.

Faculty and students fill a variety of professional production roles for the show at each home game.

A closer look: Bobcat Game Day brings together faculty, staff and media professionals from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Texas State Athletics, Texas State Global, the Office of the President and other university partners to teach in an environment that reflects the sports media field.

290 Toll, air taxis, increased fares: 6 Austin metro transportation updates

Check out the latest transportation project updates across the Austin metro.

Austin leaders look to local preparations as air taxis take off in Texas: New mobility options like electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles are now being evaluated for uses from passenger and cargo transportation to emergency response. Local officials are now moving ahead with extensive planning and outreach before the aircraft arrive.

Georgetown to reduce rideGTX operation hours, increase base cost: RideGTX, the city of Georgetown's ride voucher service, will soon eliminate overnight hours and increase its base price to combat rising costs. Once the changes go into effect, rideGTX will operate from 6 a.m. to midnight and cost a base fee of $5.

TxDOT, Mobility Authority seek public input on 290 Toll extension into Bastrop County: The two agencies are accepting comments on proposed improvements to about 15 miles of Hwy. 290 until Oct. 30. The entities are evaluating the feasibility of extending tolled main lanes alongside existing nontolled lanes, adding signalized intersections, and enhancing pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure.

TEA data: Texas districts using state-developed Bluebonnet curriculum saw slight STAAR gains

Texas school districts using the state-developed Bluebonnet Learning curriculum saw slightly better year-over-year achievement last school year than other districts, according to Texas Education Agency data released Sept. 30.

What's happening: During the 2025-26 school year, 619 of Texas' 1,200 public school districts opted in to implement at least one of the three Bluebonnet curriculum programs—elementary math, secondary math and elementary language arts.

On this spring's State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness exam, districts using the state-developed math materials saw student improvement that was 0.6 percentage points higher than students in other districts, while districts that implemented the reading materials performed 0.2 percentage points higher on the STAAR than other schools.

What they're saying: The TEA said the gains in student achievement are an "encouraging sign of early progress."

Zeph Capo, president of the Texas American Federation of Teachers, a statewide educator union, disagreed, calling the results "rather paltry."

"It may take a few more years to determine if this is a valid trend or simply an anomaly," Capo said in a statement.
