McKinney officials review proposed enhancements along SH 5

City leaders got a potential look at some improvements that could be incorporated along SH 5 during a McKinney City Council work session in July.

In a nutshell: McKinney Engineering Director Gary Graham provided an update July 7 on the upcoming project that will be led by the Texas Department of Transportation. The improvement project will come in two phases, Graham said.

The first phase, which is expected to start in 2027, plans to reconstruct and widen SH 5 as a divided four-lane road between McMakin Street and Power House Street, according to a city document. The second phase will be led by the city and will focus on median landscaping and other enhancements along the corridor, Graham said.

Looking ahead: That phase isn’t expected to start until TxDOT’s first phase is complete, Graham said. Council members will have the opportunity to provide input for preferred improvements over the coming years.

Proposed enhancements include median landscaping, streetscape elements, vertical monuments or gateway signage, according to a staff presentation.
