Retail follows rooftops along SH 130 in Hutto and Pflugerville

As new residential areas continue to spring up along SH 130 in Pflugerville and Hutto, the growing number of single-family homes, apartments and other housing types is drawing retail and commercial developers and bringing better access to goods and services.

The SH 130 corridor provides access to the region, which encourages growth and higher-density development near the toll road and gives real estate professionals a strategic advantage.

Pflugerville Mayor Doug Weiss likened it to “ripples in a pond,” explaining that growth begins with a central hub and gradually spreads outward.

The big picture: Lakeside Meadows, Emory Crossing, Skymor Carmel Creek and The Ella are just a few of several new home and apartment projects in varying stages of development along the SH 130 corridor in Hutto and Pflugerville.

These additional rooftops are highly attractive to retail and commercial development, Hutto’s Director of Economic Development Cheney Gamboa said.

Per the U.S. Census Bureau, Hutto has a population of 42,661, just under the 50,000 minimum population threshold Gamboa said many national retailers consider when planning new locations.

WilCo officials weigh justice center options amid resident opposition to proposed location

Williamson County commissioners discussed options for future jail and justice operations at a May 12 special meeting, following several public comments from residents who oppose the proposed centralized justice center on SE Inner Loop in Georgetown.

What happened: In a presentation to commissioners, County Manager Rebecca Clemons laid out logistical possibilities for the future justice center location.

Expanding the current downtown facility would require a $115 million jail remodel, plumbing infrastructure upgrades and a plan to house inmates in different counties during construction, Clemons said.

Because of this, the proposed long-term solution is to build a larger, phased justice campus on 253 acres of newly acquired land along SE Inner Loop, with a targeted completion date of 2030 or 2031, Clemons said.

The discussion: The majority of residents who spoke during public comment oppose the site of the justice center because of its proximity to neighborhoods and schools. Many live in the nearby Saddle Creek and Carlson Place communities, and said the site is less than a mile from Wagner Middle and Mitchell Elementary schools.

Q&A: Catch up with the Republicans running for Texas railroad commissioner in the May 26 runoff

On May 26, Republican voters will choose their nominee for the Texas Railroad Commission in a runoff election between former Tarrant County GOP Chair Bo French and incumbent Jim Wright.

The overview: The Republican railroad commission race is one of several statewide contests that advanced to May runoffs after no candidate received more than 50% of the vote in the March 3 primary election.

Wright and French were the two highest-performing candidates in the five-way primary race, with Wright receiving 32.1% of the vote and French collecting 31.7%.

The winner of the May 26 overtime round will face state Rep. John Rosenthal, D-Houston, in the November midterm election. Third-party candidates may also appear on the November ballot.

Did you know? The railroad commission regulates Texas’ oil and gas industry, while the state's railroads are under the control of the Texas Department of Transportation and the federal government. The agency has three commissioners elected to staggered six-year terms.

At the polls: Texans can vote early from May 18-22, with runoff election day May 26.
