Peoples Pharmacy changes ownership after nearly 50 years

Peoples Pharmacy—also known as Peoples Wellness—recently sold to Kimberli Wiley, owner of CPRx Pharmacy in Austin. The new ownership will bring expanded health and wellness offerings to all locations.

The backstory: Bill Swail opened the first Peoples Pharmacy locations in 1980 in central and South Austin. The brand later expanded to open two additional locations in Northwest Austin and Westlake.

What they offer: Peoples offers a range of wellness products, including pharmaceutical-grade supplements, beauty and personal care products, vitamins, at-home wellness testing kits and gluten-free foods.

What’s changed: With the new ownership, Wiley is launching a collaboration with Victory Medical center, which offers family and integrated medicine, urgent care, weight management and more.

Peoples Pharmacy will now expand to offer GLP-1s, peptides and nurse practitioners available to see clients in store. The new services will be offered at all four existing locations.

Round Rock ISD anticipates $23.6M deficit for FY 2025-26

Round Rock ISD is anticipating a larger-than-expected gap between revenues and expenses for the 2025-26 financial year as administrators work to close the books.

In a nutshell: Higher insurance costs, legislative impacts and property tax protests are behind a jump in the expected shortfall, RRISD’s new Chief Financial Officer Ludivina Cansino said in an Aug. 20 update.

The district is expecting a $23.6 million shortfall that will reduce its fund balance to $43.2 million, Cansino shared in her presentation.

She said the district could anticipate a hit to its financial ratings, as the Texas Education Agency factors unassigned fund balance into its annual Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas assessment of school districts’ financial practices. Generally, the system rewards districts that have a fund balance equal to around 60 to 90 days of expenditures.

At $43.2 million, this fund balance is equal to about 30 days of the approved $486.1 million in expenditures for the 2026-27 budget.

COTALAND Theme Park to host grand opening event in late September

COTALAND Theme Park is officially opening on Sept. 26, bringing racing, roller coasters, and attractions to Circuit of the Americas, or COTA, according to a news release.

“COTALAND was created to be far more than a traditional amusement park,” COTA Founder Bobby Epstein said in a news release. “This is where theme park thrills, world-class racing, live entertainment and family experiences come together in a way that doesn’t exist anywhere else in the country.”

What they offer: COTALAND is slated to feature over 30 experiences, from roller coasters to mini golf to COTA Karting and a zip line. Attractions include the Hot Lap experience where guests can ride along on the Formula 1 track.

COTALAND will have coasters like the Circuit Breaker, the first tilt roller coaster in Texas, according to the release. The park is also set to have family-friendly rides and attractions, including Kiddie Karting and Lil’ Logger, which are bite-sized versions of larger COTALAND rides.

Q&A: Get to know the candidates for US House of Representatives District 17

Incumbent U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Waco, will face Democratic challenger Casey Shepard in the race to represent District 17 in the U.S. House of Representatives. The southwestern corner of District 17 includes parts of Williamson County. The district stretches north up to Waco and east to the Lufkin area.

What to bring to the polls: Voters should bring a photo ID with them to the polls. According to the secretary of state's office, acceptable forms of photo ID include:

Texas driver's license issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS)
Texas election identification certificate issued by DPS
Texas personal identification card issued by DPS
Texas handgun license issued by DPS
U.S. Military identification card containing the person’s photograph
U.S. citizenship certificate containing the person’s photograph
U.S. passport (book or card)

The last day to register to vote is Oct. 5.
