Georgetown officials celebrated the opening of the second phase of Garey Park renovations at a Sept. 3 ribbon-cutting celebration.

What's new: Visitors can now enjoy these additions across the park grounds:

• 50,000-square-foot skate park and pump track

• Play Ranch updates including an expanded playground, new picnic shelters and an artificial turf lawn area

• Upgrades and a 2,700-square-foot addition at Garey House

• Updated hardscape improvements and a new footing mix in the Equestrian Center

• New restrooms, expanded parking, accessible paths and a dedicated Memorial Pavilion

The history: The expansion was funded by a donation from Jack Garey, who passed away in 2022. Garey, who originally donated the park land to the city of Georgetown more than 20 years ago, stipulated in his will that the capital improvement funds must be utilized within five years of his passing.

Boutique massage studio VivaWell Massage Therapy is hosting a grand reopening event from 4 to 8 p.m. Sept. 17.

The details: The grand reopening will include free mini chair massages, refreshments and a raffle.

The VivaWell event is taking place alongside the final GTX Downtown Social event of the year, hosted by the Downtown Georgetown Association and taking place in the downtown area from 4 to 8 p.m.

Three candidates are running to lead the Texas General Land Office in the Nov. 3 election.

The overview: Democrat Benjamin Flores and Libertarian Neill Snider are challenging Republican incumbent Dawn Buckingham for the seat.

Buckingham ran uncontested in the March Republican primary, Community Impact reported, while Flores won the Democratic primary. Snider was selected as the Texas Libertarian Party's candidate during an April nominating convention.

The context: The state land commissioner manages 13 million acres of state lands, with duties such as allocating disaster recovery funds, leasing state lands to generate revenue for the Texas Permanent School Fund, preserving state landmarks such as The Alamo and overseeing several veterans programs.

Looking ahead: Early voting runs from Oct. 19-30 in the midterm election, and Election Day is Nov. 3.
