Former Fort Worth Mayor and later U.S. Representative Kay Granger died Aug. 2 at the age of 83. Granger represented the 12th Congressional District from 1997-2025.

The details: Granger graduated from Eastern Hills High School in Fort Worth and attended Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth. She was a journalism and English teacher at Richland High School in Birdville ISD and later owned her own insurance agency. She became a chairman of the Fort Worth Zoning Commission, where she served from 1981-89.

Granger joined the Fort Worth City Council in 1989 and served a two-year term. She became the city’s first female mayor and the 41st mayor when she took office on May 21, 1991. She served in that role until Dec. 19, 1995.

In their own words: “Over the years that I worked with Kay, I learned from her indelible spirit, work ethic, constant sacrifice and unwavering commitment to Texas and Fort Worth,” Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker said. “I’m fortunate to have called her a mentor and friend.”

Jonny’s Pizza, which served New York-style pizza and Italian food in Fort Worth, has closed.

What happened? A sign on the door, dated June 19, detailed a lockout notice for failure to pay delinquent rent from Texas Legacy Asset Management, the management company for the landlord.

Jonny’s Pizza opened its first location in 2019 in Aubrey and the Fort Worth location followed in 2021, according to previous reporting.

The restaurant served a variety of pizzas, pastas, salads, appetizers, subs and wings using fresh ingredients, according to its website.

The company still has locations in Aubrey and Frisco, according to its website.

Zonda Demographics provides enrollment projections for roughly 100 school districts in Texas, according to data from the company. Rocky Gardiner, the company's director of school district consulting, said the company produces both short-term and long-term projections, up to 10 years. 

The details: Gardiner said district leaders use the short-term, one-year projections to guide staffing and budget planning, and long-term projections to plan when to open or close a school.

“We have the technology to help them see what it looks like if a school gets closed or a school gets added with how that impacts their enrollment going forward,” Gardiner said.

Zooming in: Predicting school enrollment has become more complicated since COVID-19 due to more school options such as virtual schools, homeschooling and charter schools, Gardiner said.

When Gardiner first started doing enrollment projections in 2006, the projections were primarily based on new housing, with the development patterns showing an average of about six new public school students per 10 new homes built, but that number has dropped, Gardiner said.
