Round Rock voters to decide on digital billboards, fire standards

Round Rock voters will decide on two proposed amendments to the city charter addressing digital billboards and fire department staffing standards in the May 2 election.

The measures address different issues, but both were circulated through a campaign by the Round Rock Professional Firefighters Association.

Proposition A: The proposed amendment under Proposition A would allow up to 12 new privately owned, operated and funded electronic message center billboards, each designed as double-sided digital signs, in designated highway corridors such as I-35 and SH 45.

Proposition B: Proposition B asks voters whether to amend city ordinances to require the Round Rock Fire Department to meet national standards.

The proposal would add a new section to the city charter directing the department to follow guidelines outlined in NFPA 1710, a national standard developed by the National Fire Protection Association that sets benchmarks for fire department staffing and response times.

TSTC adding semiconductor, automation, robotics curriculum this fall

The East Williamson County Texas State Technical College campus will add semiconductor technology as well as automation and robotics technology curriculum this fall, the trade school announced April 8.

What you need to know: The addition of these courses to the Hutto school's curriculum is a direct response to a surge in demand for skilled workers in the semiconductor and manufacturing industries in Williamson County, per a news release shared by TSTC. This surge in demand is largely driven by increased local fabrication and domestic chip production.

The details: The new curriculum will join the college's existing Industrial Maintenance program among offerings in the greater Advanced Manufacturing program geared toward the local semiconductor and manufacturing industry. Registration for the summer and fall 2026 semesters is now open, according to the college.

St. David's breaks ground on South Austin expansion

The $180 million St. David’s South Austin Medical Center expansion broke ground March 2, ahead of construction on the project’s four-story patient tower later this year.

The details: The new tower will include a 30-bed patient care unit, a 20-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit, four new operating rooms with shell space for future OR expansion, an eight-bed pre- and post-surgical unit, a seven-bay post-anesthesia care unit, and new lobby and waiting areas. The development will also feature new utility infrastructure, a sterile processing department and shell space for future additions.

Quote of note: “As South Austin continues to grow, we’re responding with an investment that expands access to surgical, rehabilitation and inpatient care, while strengthening the infrastructure that supports our clinical teams,” hospital CEO Charles Laird said in a statement.
