During the July 21 College Station ISD school board meeting, the district will vote on millions in expenditures for the upcoming 2026-27 school year, as well as updates and the potential issuance of new bonds.

The overview: According to the agenda material, the 2026 bond issuance is not to exceed $96,175,000, and the updated amount for Proposition A now totals $284,975,000. Proposition A consists of improvements and additions, including: 

• Renovations to Rock Prairie Elementary, A&M Consolidated High School and College Station High School, along with Phase 2 of the career and technical education facility and cosmetology lab added to A&M Consolidated
• Improvements to middle school playing fields and stadiums throughout the district
• The addition of a central administrative office, transportation facilities and bus parking, and the purchase and acquisition of sites for school facilities, school buses and vehicles

The Texas A&M Forest Service announced an investment in firefighting aircraft after the Texas legislature allocated the service $257 million in 2025 for a multi-year investment in aircraft.

At a glance: The investment comes after the 6,304 wildfires that burned 132,366 acres across the state in 2025. According to a news release from the Texas A&M Forest Service, the state has relied on federal resources and the Texas Military Department for firefighting aircraft aid.

Texas A&M University System Chancellor Glenn Hegar said Texas's growth as a state facilitates the necessary addition of firefighting aircraft.

“These aircraft will give Texas A&M Forest Service another critical tool to respond quickly, support firefighters on the ground and help protect lives, property and natural resources across our state,” Hegar said. “This investment strengthens Texas’ ability to respond when every minute counts.”

Going forward: The first aircraft is set to be delivered to the Forest Service in December 2027, with the second expected three to six months later.

During the week of July 20-24, construction of the “Big 6” highway will cause full and single-lane closures throughout Bryan-College Station.

What you need to know:

• July 20: full closure of the northbound mainlanes from Barron Road to Harvey Road, 7:30 p.m.-6:30 a.m.
  • All traffic will have to exit on Rock Prairie Road and re-enter south of Harvey Road.
  • All of the entrance ramps off of Barron Road, Harvey Mitchell Parkway, and Southwest Parkway will also be closed, along with the northbound mainlanes on William J. Bryan Parkway, Old Reliance Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Street.
• July 21-22: full closure of the northbound mainlanes from Harvey Road to Texas Avenue, 7:30 p.m.-6:30 a.m.
  • All traffic will have to exit on Southwest Parkway and re-enter on Texas Avenue and Deacon Drive.
  • All of the ramps off of Harvey Road, Southwest Parkway, and Harvey Mitchell Parkway will also be closed, along with the northbound mainlanes on William J. Bryan Parkway, Old Reliance Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Street.

According to officials with the National Weather Service, a tropical depression is working on gaining strength and organization in the Gulf, and Houston area officials are monitoring the storm for potential local impacts. 

What we know: Officials with the Houston-Galveston office of the NWS released advisories for Tropical Depression Two, a weather disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico that has the potential to turn into a tropical storm by July 21. Based on current models from the NWS, the storm could bring tropical storm-level winds and rain to the Greater Houston area over the weekend.

Stay tuned: Officials are urging residents to check all hurricane preparations regardless of additional storm development in the coming days. If the storm continues to gain strength, it will become Tropical Storm Bertha, per the NWS.
