Texan Mattress officials are planning to open a new location soon in the ArchPoint at 1485 retail center in New Caney, said Saqib Ali, president of project developer ArchPoint Ventures, via email Sept. 1.

What they offer: Texan Mattress sells mattresses made by a variety of brands as well as mattress protectors, pillows, bed frame bases and sheets, according to the company’s website. The location in New Caney is owned by Derrick and Dionne Jones.

Some context: ArchPoint at 1485 features 14,000 square feet of retail space, as previously reported by Community Impact. The center will be home to other businesses, including Lee Psychiatry, a salon and an insurance office, Ali said.

Montgomery County voters will choose between incumbent Mark Keough and challenger James Graf for Montgomery County Judge in the upcoming general election on Nov. 3.

What you need to know: The deadline for Montgomery County locals to register to vote is Oct. 5.

Early voting is scheduled to run from Oct. 19 through Oct. 30. On Election Day, Nov. 3, polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Montgomery County commissioners will meet on Sept. 17 to discuss temporary office and courtroom operations for the new 523rd District Court.

What you need to know: Commissioners voted to create this larger court on Aug. 26, 2025, to address growing caseloads and overcrowding at the county jail. The court will be funded in the county's fiscal year 2026-27 budget, with annual operating costs estimated at around $1.5 million.

Also of note: A public hearing will be held for amendments to the county's Drainage Criteria Manual and Thoroughfare Plan. Commissioners will review revisions to the manual, which establishes minimum engineering requirements for drainage design and construction. They will also review amendments to the Thoroughfare Plan, a countywide transportation roadmap used to plan and deliver future projects.

Before you go: The county will discuss the ongoing project to connect David Memorial Drive to Hwy. 242. This project involves building the final 1,500 feet of roadway to improve traffic flow.

Texas does not have a single system to connect first responders in emergencies, meaning local and state agencies often operate on a network of radio systems that are not always compatible with one another.

The big picture: State leaders said there are more than 50 different radio systems used by first responder agencies across Texas.

"We have situations where counties and cities are on separate ones, and they never know it until they have to [communicate with] each other," state Rep. Ken King, R-Canadian, said during a Sept. 14 legislative hearing.

Looking ahead: King has vowed to pass a bill to integrate first responder communications under a statewide system during the 2027 legislative session, with some emergency management experts calling interagency communications "the No. 1 issue" in the aftermath of disasters.

"[This] is not simply a communication issue—it's a responder safety issue and an operational effectiveness issue," said Kyle Mills, head of planning and preparedness for the Texas A&M Forest Service.
