San Marcos finds solution to save select painted road art pieces

City of San Marcos crews began removing painted crosswalks and curb extensions, featuring local wildlife and plants, along San Antonio Street in San Marcos on April 22 to comply with a Texas Department of Transportation, or TxDOT, directive.

What happened: Following community support for the city’s roadway artwork, the city has since submitted a new action plan to TxDOT that includes a roadway solution allowing for the painted curb extensions at San Antonio Street and Comanche Street to remain, according to a city social media post.

A solution involving the construction of sloped curbs around the painted extensions was agreed upon, according to the post. Construction on the roadway will be completed this week.

How we got here: In October 2025, TxDOT issued a letter to municipalities across the state requesting the removal of all noncompliant pavement markings.

Noncompliant markings include those that do not serve a traffic control or safety function and are located on travel lanes, shoulders, intersections and crosswalks, according to the letter.

Lyndon Baines Johnson, the 36th president of the United States, attended Southwest Texas State Teachers College, now known as Texas State University, from 1927-1930. In 1998, the Hays County Commissioners Court voted to honor Johnson’s time at the university in San Marcos with a museum.

The Lyndon Baines Johnson Museum of San Marcos opened in 2006 and is celebrating its 20th anniversary throughout the year.

What’s next: The museum will hold events throughout the year to celebrate its 20th anniversary, Butler said, including:

  • July: United States birthday celebration
  • August 13: Summer Chautauqua, a presentation on fashion through the lens of Lady Bird Johnson and Jackie Kennedy
  • August: Community birthday for Johnson
  • September: Back-to-school contests with Head Start programs
  • October: Fall lecture
  • December 6: Official 20-year anniversary celebration with museum dedication and reception
The gist: The museum’s mission is to highlight the values Johnson learned during his time at the San Marcos university that influenced him during his presidency, said Debby Butler, LBJ Museum of San Marcos manager.
