Mural planned for South End District in Bastrop

A mural will be added to a Texas Department of Transportation overpass along Hwy. 71 in Bastrop's South End District.

Next steps: The Bastrop Cultural Arts Committee has an open call for artists as part of the South End District mural project. It will be located on M.L.K. Junior Drive and is projected to take approximately three to four months to be completed, according to city documents.

What we know: Bastrop City Council established South End District boundaries during a Sept. 23, 2025, meeting.

“The South End’s story deserves to be seen, heard and celebrated,” Place 1 council member Perry Lowe said at the time.

Crawfish KRAK House moves to Del Valle after Back 9 Bar closure

Crawfish KRAK House has relocated to Del Valle following the closure of its previous host site, Back 9 Bar.

What we know: Owner Kris Martinez is now serving Louisiana-style crawfish with sides, such as potatoes, corn and sausage, from his boil rig outside of Santo Patio—a Mexican bar and grill along the eastbound lanes of Hwy. 71.

He called his boils, which are available for purchase from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, “straight-from-the-bayou spicy.”

What residents should know: Crawfish KRAK House will be in Rosanky on April 4 to compete for the Best Crawfish Around Award at Bastrop BayouFest—an event at 3004 S. Hwy. 304 that will feature all-you-can-eat crawfish and live music.

“If you’ve been waiting for a reason, this is it,” Martinez said in a social media post. “Pull up hungry.”

Dell Children’s becomes first Central Texas pediatric hospital to complete bone marrow transplants

Dell Children’s Medical Center in Central Austin has become the first pediatric hospital to provide bone marrow transplants, also known as stem cell transplants, in Central Texas.

The impact: The procedure increases the cure rate for pediatric cancer patients, Dell Children’s doctors told Community Impact.

The new stem cell transplant program means Austin-area families no longer have to leave Central Texas to receive lifesaving cancer care, said Dr. Amir Mian, the program’s medical director and division chief for pediatric oncology and hematology.

“Previously, everybody had to travel out of town, and what it meant was leaving home for more than a month, sometimes even longer,” Mian said. “Now they don’t have to ... nobody has to leave town just to get lifesaving treatment.”

How it works: The transplant involves removing a patient's bone marrow and replacing older stem cells by administering new stem cells to pediatric cancer patients through an IV, Mian said.

The stem cells travel to the patient’s bone marrow and begin producing healthy blood cells that may restore the patient's immune system.
